SHARON — Nine people are displaced after their Sharon home burned Tuesday afternoon in an accidental fire that began in the kitchen.
Sharon fire Chief Terry Whalen said Choniece McCullough and her daughter had gone to a nearby store and spotted smoke when they came home.
Ms. McCullough called firefighters at 1:07 p.m., Whalen said. No one was inside when the blaze broke out at 422 Malleable St., he said.
Damage to the home was extensive and it appears the fire began near the stove.
Whalen said Ms. McCullough, her fiance Vi Ngo, five children and two teenage relatives lived at the home, which is owned by Steve and Marcia Walters.
Firefighters rescued a pit bull puppy from the basement, Whalen said. No one was hurt in the fire, but Ms. McCullough was taken to the hospital for treatment after her asthma flared up after the fire was put out, the chief said.
The owners have insurance on the home, but the tenants do not, he said.
The kitchen was destroyed and there’s heavy smoke damage to the dining room and fire damage to the second floor and attic, Whalen said. There’s heat and smoke damage throughout the large house, he said.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family, Whalen said. Sharon firefighters also gave the family $100 from a fund of the International Association of Firefighters Local 417, Capt. Keith Wareham said.
Farrell firefighters assisted under the cities’ joint automatic response agreement.
