Tipoff tourneys end; Reynolds' Mathews 2nd at Ironman

---- — The tipoff to the 2011-12 basketball season wrapped up on Saturday with the conclusion of tipoff tournaments across the state while several local wrestling squads competed in Hickory’s “HIT” Tourney, Greenville held its annual Sheetz Duals and Reynolds competed in the prestigious Ironman Tourney at Walsh Jesuit High in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Following are results reported to The Herald.

WRESTLING

Ironman Tourney

Reynolds HIgh junior ace Austin Mathews, a state runner-up last season, finished 2nd at 138 at Walsh Jesuit High in Ohio Saturday. The Ironman is regarded as one of the top tournaments in the country.

In the finals against top-seed Nate Skoniezky of Walsh, Mathews lost by a controversial fall to finish 4-1. Earlier he pinned the No. 2 seed.

Mathews was trailing 4-3 with about 40 seconds to go. During a flurry near the edge of the mat, Mathews was coming out on top, but the ref slapped the mat to call a defensive pin.

“To me it looked like they had gone off the mat. And I didn’t think the ref was in position to make the pin call,” said 1st-year Raiders’ coach Casey Taylor. “But I always tell the kids, ‘You can’t blame the referee.’

“I think this might work in a positive way. But I’m still real proud of him, the way he wrestled and the way he handled himself after the disappointing ending.

“I was really thrilled with the way the team wrestled. We were in 11th place (with a few finals matches to go) and that was without Dylan D’Urso. I think we could have been 8th or 9th if Dylan had wrestled. For the overall effort, I’m real pleased.”

Raider Blake Heim finished 7th at 285, going 5-2. Senior standout D’Urso was held out of the tournament with a slight knee injury.

Records for the other Raider matmen were: 106 - Mike Bartolo, 0-2; 113 - Alex DiGregorio, 3-2; 120 - Neal Engstrom, 1-2; 126 - Mason McCollum, 2-2; 132 - Matt Reise, 1-2; 145 - Levi Stoyer, 1-2; 152 - Tyler Miller, 0-2; 160 - Matt Tofani, 2-2; 170 - Austin Moffett, 1-2; 182 - Jamar Henry, 1-2; 195 - Tommy Davis, 1-2; 220 - Logan Rickert, 1-2.
