HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Greenville nips Wilmington in double OT


Despite the snowfall Friday night, many local teams braved the weather to compete in key league competition. Leading the way was the battle for first place in Region 2-AA, where Greenville edged Wilmington in double overtime.

The only reported postponed game was the Slippery Rock at Farrell contest. Following are results of Friday sports events reported to The Herald:

BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Greenville 66, Wilmington 60 (2OT) — At Wilmington, the Trojans of coach Mark Batt grabbed first place in Region 2-AA with a thrilling double-overtime victory.

“I would have liked to see it end a little sooner,” said Batt. “We just couldn’t hit our free throws to put it away. And we had supposedly our best free-throw shooters at the line.

“We shot 58 percent from 3 (point range). I told them, step back from the line to 3-point range, you’re making those.

“But it was a big game on the road. The kids really responded; I’m very happy.”

The regulation game ended in a 53 deadlock and both teams scored 5 points in the first overtime. The big blow in the second OT was a trey by Nico Zahniser, his only points of the game.

Greenville (5-1, 11-7) was led by Cody Marshall with 23 points, Jordan Batt 18 and Nate Houpt 13. Batt also had 11 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 steals and 3 assists. Marshall had 4 assists and 7 rebounds.

Wilmington (4-2, 8-10) was paced by Jake DeMedal and Darryl Pace with 28 and 23 points respectively.

ä Hickory 63, Oil City 44 — At The Hive in Hermitage, Matt Durisko surpassed the career 1,000-point plateau with a game-high 25-point performance.

Durisko now has scored 1,009 points during his Hornets’ career.

Also for Hickory (4-6, 10-8), Nicky DiBartolomeo mustered a dozen pionts, Aaron Banas dished out 6 assists, and

Garret Trosch took down 9 caroms.

For Oil City, Dallas Williams went for 21 points, but was the only Oiler in double figures during the Region 5-AAA tilt.

ä Grove City 56, Sharon 48 — At Grove City, the Eagles edged the Tigers in a Region 5-AAA affair involving a pair of teams jockeying for postseason berths.

Grove City sank 12 of 18 free-throw attempts, compared with Sharon’s 9-for-10 marksmanship.

Pat Johnson (17), Brady Beech (15), Jeff Hershberger (12) and Torin Smith (10) gave Grove City (6-4, 14-4) a quartet of double-digit scorers.

For Sharon (5-5, 6-12), ’Dray Jefferson joined Louis Brown in double figures as they bucketed 18 and 14 points, respectively.

The Eagles eased to a 46-33 lead through 3 periods, then weathered Sharon’s 15-10 surge during the 4th frame.

ä Kennedy Catholic 79, Jamestown 60 — At Hermitage, the hos Golden Eagles eased to the Region 1-A win. However Jamestown did slice its deficit to 9 points after trailing 19-5 at the outset.

Justin Rahim rifled in a game-high 26 points to key Kennedy (6-0, 12-5), while Jake Penn and Matt Gurska garnered 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Nick Miller mustered 15 marker for the Muskies (0-6, 1-15), while Ryan Avril and David Richter evenly divided an additional 22 tallies.

ä Sharpsville 62, Mercer 48 — At Mercer, the visiting Blue Devils’ Ben Davis drilled home 19 points to pace a trio of double-digit scorers. Eric Sike and Jon Wilson contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively, for Sharpsville (4-2 in Region 2-AA, 10-8).

Davis delivered 4 of the Blue Devils’ 7 triples.

For Mercer (0-5, 4-13), Justin Glass garnered a game-high equalling 19 points and Damian Burns bucketed a dozen.

ä Reynolds 52, Lakeview 49 — At Transfer, the host Raiders pulled off their first Region 2-AA victory of the year. The Raiders built a 34-23 margin by halftime, then held on in the second half for the victory.

In that first half, Brandon Weaver knocked down 18 of his 22 points. Tony Patterson added 13 markers for Reynolds (1-4, 5-11). Weaver, who connected on 9 of 10 floor shots, added 10 caroms for a double-double.

Lakeview (3-3, 8-9) was led by Casey Greggs with 12 points and Jake Philson 10.
