While Grove City was at Sharon, only five other games were on the week 9 schedule Friday night — two Region 1-A contests, a pair of 3-AA clashes and Brookfield visiting LaBrae in a week 10 clash in the Buckeye State.
In Region 1-A, the Mustangs beat Farrell, 10-7, on “Senior Night” in Mercer, while West Middlesex routed Lakeview, 41-6. In 3-AA action, Hickory defeated Reynolds, 28-7, and the Hounds handled Greenville, 26-0, in New Wilmington.
In Ohio, coach Randy Clark’s Brookfield Warriors closed out the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record with a 48-17 victory over LaBrae.
Sharpsville was off. They return to the field on Friday to battle Sharon at Tiger Stadium.
In a Region 1-A contest today, Conneaut (1-4, 4-4) faces Kennedy Catholic (1-4, 1-7) in a 1 p.m. kickoff at Butala Stadium in Hermitage.
The following were reported to The Herald:
ä West Middlesex 41, Lakeview 6 — At Lakeview, the state ranked Big Reds (6-0, 8-1) secured their first region title since 2006 with the lopsided Region 1A victory over the Sailors (3-3, 5-4).
“It’s exciting,” said West Middlesex coach Jason McElhaney, whose team entered the game ranked seventh in the PIAA by the Harrisburg Patriot-News. “A lot of people devalue the region championship, because it doesn’t mean a ton, but to us it does. It’s an accomplishment. It was something that we were striving for and to finish off a clean slate in the legion. The guys took care off business tonight.”
While Middlesex knows its playoff fate, the Sailors — who finished in a third place tie with Farrell in the region — will be on pins and needles wondering if they, too, win get an invite to the District 10 Class tournament when the brackets are announced in the near future.
“I’d think (we’d qualify for the playoffs),” Lakeview coach Dan York said. “We beat (Region 2) third seed Cochranton on their home field. District 10 is probably still mad at me after they took Eisenhower over us a few years ago, but it’s up to District 10. They’re going to do what they want to do.”
After a first quarter that saw West Middlesex take a 7-0 lead on Luke Patten’s 24-yard run, the Big Reds broke the game wide open with 34 second quarter points, including three touchdowns in less than 5 minutes.
Sage Pope scored on 57- and 60-yard aerials from quarterback Trey Staunch and receiver Jeremy Jansco, respectively. Eric Lucich (2-yard run), Patten (12-yard run) and Jansco (37-yard interception return) scored the other West Middlesex points.
Staunch went over the 1,000-yard plateau in the game by passing for 114 yards and now has 1,033 yards on the season. Patten led all groundgainers with 119 yards on 15 carries.
The Sailors got on the board late in the game when standout running back Blake Reddick scooted in from 6 yards out with under 4 minutes to play. Reddick finished with all 88 yards (84 rushing and 4 receiving) for Lakeview. — Information submitted by Herald Sports Correspondent Corey J. Corbin.
ä Hickory 28, Reynolds 7 — At Hickory, the normally run-oriented Hornets turned to the arm of junior quarterback Matt Voytik Friday night and he responded by throwning 4 touchdown passes.
Voytik connected on 2 scoring aerials with Dionte Pope for 3 and 60 yards, while hitting Devon Tindell with a 58-yarder and Lou Derloni on a 50-yarder. Anthony Connone booted the 4 PAT kicks. Voytik ended the night with 7-of-10 passing for 195 yards.
Hickory star running back DeShawn Coleman was held to minus-one yard on stats submitted to The Herald. However, a couple of long runs were reportedly called back because of penalties.
Reynolds’ lone score came on a 9-yard run by Kellen Gursky and Joe Yarzab’s point-after kick tied the game early in the second quarter. But from there out, all the scoring belonged to the Hornets.
Coach Bill Brest’s Hornets, ranked 7th in the state by the Harrisburg Patriot-News, finishes Region 3-AA action with a 6-1 record (8-1 overall) and tied with Wilmington and Grove City for the regular season title. All three will earn District 10 playoff spots, with the D-10 committee to decide the seeding.
Reynolds is 3-4, 6-3.
ä Mercer 10, Farrell 7 — At Mercer, the Mustangs of coach Pat McClearn may not be headed for the playoffs this season, but they notched a big victory in their final Region 1-A contest of the season against the playoff-bound Steelers.
Mercer’s Chase Hoffman booted a 17-yard field goal with only 8 ticks left on the clock to break a 7-all tie and thrill the home fans on Senior Night.
After a scoreless first half, Mercer got on the scoreboard in the third period on 55-yard sprint by Austin Slagle and Hoffman was good on the PAT.
Farrell tied the game in the fourth frame on a 46-yard pass from Joe Goudy to London Pinkins and Austin Pickens kicked the point-after. That set up the late game heroics by Hoffman.
The Mercer defense shut down Farrell’s running game, holding the Steelers to 31 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, the Mercer offense controlled the ball well, amassing 198 yards total.
Each team had a pair of interceptions, with Evan Nan and Trent Leonard grabbing picks for Mercer and Farrell’s Pinkins and Malik Graham returning the favor.
Farrell is 3-3 in Region 1-A and 6-3 overall, while Mercer is 1-5, 3-6. Farrell will be the 3rd seed in the D-10 playoffs from the region behind West Middlesex and Sharpsville.
ä Wilmington 26, Greenville 0 — At Wilmington, the Hounds Hammer defense pitched a shutout as Wilmington finished Region 3-AA play at 6-1 and tied with Hickory and Grove City for the region crown.
All three teams have completed league play. District 10 will determine the seeding from the region for the upcoming D-10 playoffs.
The Hounds of coach Terry Verrelli jumped ahead 14-0 in the first quarter on a pair of Tyler Donati TDs (runs of 21 and 1 yards) and two PAT kicks by Slavi Pontius.
In the second quarter, Wilmington scored on a 17-yard pass from Cody Llewellyn to Nic Pugh, but the PAT kick failed.
Wilmington scored field goals in both the third and fourth period. Pontius booted a 32-yarder while Brandon Ryder hit on a 34-yarder.
Greenville, which could earn the fourth seed from Region 3-AA, finished league play at 4-3 and is 4-5 overall.
ä Brookfield 48, LaBrae 17 — At Leavittsburg, Warriors’ quarterback Jeremy Quinlan was 10-of-16 for 190 yards and 4 touchdowns and Ryan Mosora rushed for 222 yards and scored twice as Brookfield closed out the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record.
It is the program’s best single-season record since they went 9-0 in 1978 and the win virtually clinched a home-field advantage for the 1st round of the OHSAA playoffs.
Mosora scored on runs of 24 and 74 yards. Quinlan had a 4-yard TD run and fired scoring strikes to Joe Clark (6 yards), Don McFarland (35 yards), R.J. Leon (6 yards) and Collin Harkulich (25 yards).
LaBrae quarterback Payton Aldridge fired a pair of touchdown passes to Marcel Richardson (20, 5 yards) and Ian Simmons booted a 28-yard field goal.
Brookfield is ranked 6th in the state in Div. IV and 1st in Region 13.
