Roundup: Sharpsville spikers top KC in battle of playoff-bound teams

ä Sharpsville 3, Kennedy Catholic 0 —
At Hermitage, the state’s 3rd-ranked Blue Darlings (14-3) notched a 25-13, 25-20, 25-20 sweep over KC (12-3) in a matchup of playoff-bound teams.

Brie Dickson had 5 kills for the Lady Golden Eagles to reach 414 for her career. That set a school record, breaking the previous mark of 412 that was set by 2009 graduate Ashley Samuels.

Coach Scott Scurpa’s Blue Darlings went 14-0 to capture the Region 1 championship.

“This group of seniors hasn’t lost a region game in four years,” said Scurpa. “I don’t think they dropped a set during region play this year. We’re looking forward to the playoffs.”

Thursday’s match was a “Pink-out” game to raise funds and awardness in the fight against breast cancer.

“We need to thank Douglas & Joseph, Valley Silkscreen and Mancino Driving because they really pitched in a lot of stuff,” said Scurpa. “The girls from both schools raised almost $2,000. The event was coordinated by Dejah Springer (Sharpsville teacher) and Heidi Patterson (KC). They did a great job organizing it.”

Both teams will compete in the District 10 playoffs that start Tuesday at Meadville High School.

ä West Middlesex 3, Farrell 0 — At West Middlesex, the Ms. Reds improved to 11-5 with the win over the Lady Steelers, 25-14, 25-13, 25-10.

ä Hickory 3, Grove City 2 — At “The Hive” in Hermitage, Hickory (7-5) notched a thrilling 24-26, 25-13, 20-25, 25-22, 15-13 win over the Lady Eagles.

ä Lakeview 3, Reynolds 0 — On “Senior Night” in Stoneboro, Hailey Grossman, who is only 5-foot-1, had 6 digs, 10 points and her first-ever kill in leading the Lady Sailors (9-5) past Reynolds, 25-14, 25-13, 25-13.

ä Commodore Perry 3, Jamestown 2 — At Jamestown, the Lady Panthers edged the hosts, 15-25, 25-16, 26-24, 16-25, 15-10.

ä Fairview 5, Kennedy Catholic 0 —
In a District 10 play-in game Thursday at Cathedral Prep High School, the Tigers held a slim 1-0 lead after the 1st half and exploded for 4 second-half goals as they ended the season for the Golden Eagles.

Anthony Martone scored with 19 minutes left in the 1st half to give Fairview that 1-0 lead.

Martone tallied again with 34 minutes left in the 2nd half for a 2-0 Tiger lead. The other goals were scored by Carl Fonticella (33 minutes left), Greg Berdis (16:44 left) and Mac Tompkins (8:28 remaining).

KC closes out the season with a 13-4-1 record while Fairview improved to 14-3-2.

Fairview advances to the D-10 playoffs to battle Mercyhurst Prep, the Region 3 champions, at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Gen. McLane High School in Edinboro.

ä North East 3, Slippery Rock 0 — On Wednesday at North East, the host Grapepickers prevailed on goals from Jim Jobczysnki, McKenzie Kopp and Tom Martin.

Slippery Rock goalkeeper Zach Latorre made 5 saves, 1 more than North East netminder Mitchell Keith.

GIRLS SOCCER

ä Kennedy Catholic 6, Corry 3 —
At Butala Stadium in Hermitage, Monica Riggle scored 4 goals in leading the Lady Golden Eagles to victory.

Tawney Godfrey and Anna Benson had the other goals for KC. Benson, Autumn Jarvie and Hennessy Zolnier were credited with assists.

Shelby McElhinny and Stacy Goclano split time in goal for KC. McElhinny made 3 saves while Goclano registered 8 saves.

Bri Sulecki had 2 goals for Corry while Katie Zimmerman had 1 goal and 1 assist. Emily Benedict posted 13 saves in goal for the Lady Beavers.

ä Hickory 7, Mercer 1 — In Hermitage in a battle of region champions Wednesday night, Hickory prevailed in a big way.

For Hickory it was: M.K. Bair 2 goals, 1 assist; Sara Suler and Haley Smith 1 goal, 1 assist each; Jackie White 2 goals; Isabella Spadafora 4 assists; Jenna Placzek 1 goal. For Mercer, Adelyn Cook scored.

Hickory won the Region 2 championship and will open the Class AA playoffs at 7 p.m. Monday against Gen. McLane at Franklin High Stadium. Mercer, Region 1 winner, will open the D-10 Class A playoffs at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Iroquois, also at Franklin.

ä Girard 1, West Middlesex 0 — At Girard Wednesday, the Ms. Reds concluded the season with the tough loss.

Taylor Phalp scored the lone goal for the host team. For West Middlesex (4-12-2), McKenzie Thompson had 19 saves in goal.
