Roundup: Sharpsville spikers to finals; Mercer boys, girls soccer teams to play for D-10 titles

D-10 Class A Semifinals

ä Sharpsville 3, Cochranton 0 —
At Meadville’s “House of Thrills,” coach Scott Scurpa’s Region 1 champion Blue Darlings (16-3) posted a 25-18, 25-14, 25-23 sweep of the Lady Cards (12-3).

Sharpsville will face Maplewood at noon Saturday at Meadville High for the D-10 crown. Maplewood swept Saegertown on Thursday, 25-19, 25-23, 25-14.

Kristen Scurpa had 11 kills, 28 assists and 6 digs for Sharpsville while Paige Scurpa registered 16 kills.

Also, Madeline Shuttleworth had 9 kills, Megan Davis posted 5 kills and Alex Ferrera tallied 17 digs.

“Our two middles (Rachel D’Auria and Emily Anderson) really played a sound defensive game,” said Sharpsville coach Scott Scurpa.

“This is the first time we’ll be in the District 10 championship game and we’re really excited about it,” said Scurpa. “The girls are really peaking and playing well right now. We are playing a really good team on Saturday and we’ve got to come out and play our ‘A’ game to beat them.”

GIRLS SOCCER

D-10 Class A Semifinals

ä Mercer 1, Iroquois 0 —
At Franklin High School, the Region 1 champion Mercer Lady M’s (12-5-2) edged Iroquois (9-6-2) in the semifinals.

With 19:04 left in the match, Megan Lane put a shot on goal for Mercer and Iroquois keeper Morgan Stetson couldn’t hold on to the ball and the Lady M’s’ Mindy Brown buried the rebound for the only score of the game.

Stetson had 7 saves in net for Iroquois while Analise Whenry made 3 for Mercer. The Lady M’s outshot the Lady Braves 9-4.

The Lady M’s advance to play Fairview for the District 10 championship on Saturday at a site and time TBA. — Stats submitted by Herald correspondent Corey J. Corbin.

ä Fairview 4, Wilmington 1 — At Gen. McLane High, the defending District 10 champion Lady Hounds (8-9-1) were ousted by the Lady Tigers (16-3).

Jessica Mihalic scored a pair of goals for Fairview, the Region 3 champs. She scored 2 minutes into the match and with 18 minutes left in the 1st half.

Elle Bennett gave Fairview a 3-1 lead with 12 minutes left.

No stats were reported by Wilmington.

D-10 Class AA Semifinals

ä Mercyhurst Prep 2, Hickory 1 —
At Gen. McLane High School in Edinboro, Region 4 champion Mercyhurst Prep (14-4) ousted the Region 2 champion Hornettes (16-3-1).

Michelle DeGerolamo scored within the match’s first 5 minutes off an assist from Isabella Spadafora.

Taylor Smallshaw and Olivia Augustyniak both scored in the 2nd half to give the Lady Lakers the lead.

Morgan McBride made 22 saves between the pipes for Hickory.

“Morgan had the greatest game of her career,” said Hickory coach B.J. Rudge. “She played absolutely phenomenal.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am to coach these girls. They came in and knew it was going to be a tough game, but they just did not stop. They played with their hearts and with passion and intensity.

“I want to thank the coaching staff that supported us the entire season and would also like to thank the seniors for their great contributions to the program.”

Hickory’s seniors are DeGerolamo, Robyn McGowan, Julia White, Camilyn Clemenza, Allyssa McClure, Kayla O’Kresik and Sarah Dorko.

Hickory had beaten Gen. McLane 2-1 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday to advance to the semifinals while MP ousted Grove City, 6-0.

Mercyhurst Prep advances to face Villa Maria on Saturday at a site and time TBA. Villa routed Slippery Rock, 9-2, on Thursday night.

BOYS SOCCER

D-10 Class A Semifinals

ä Mercer 4, North East 3 (SO) —
At Franklin High, the Region 1 champion Mustangs (17-1-1) defeated the Grapepickers (14-4) in a shootout thriller.

Chase Hoffman had both goals for Mercer in regulation. He scored at 29:46 in the 1st half on a Zach Kroll assist and then tied the match 2-all with 43 seconds left before the break off an assist from Will Juergens.

Justin Eby and Joe Neff had the goals for NE. The times were 32:00 and 21:46 of the 1st half.

In the shootout, Zach and Nathan Kroll, Nathan Breese and Will Juergens scored for Mercer. Matt Juergens’ shot was wide right.

For NE, Chase Doyle, Brandon Garske and Colin Gregory scored in the shootout. Ryan Roggie’s attempt was stopped by Mercer keeper Alan Rabold and Ethan Sowers’ shot went wide right.

Rabold made 6 saves for the Mustangs while Mitchell Keith had 2 for the Grapepickers.

Mercer plays Mercyhurst Prep for the D-10 title on Saturday at a site and time TBA. Mercyhurst beat Fairview, 1-0, on Thursday night. The Lakers scored with 7 seconds left in regulation to win the match. — Stats submitted by Herald correspondent Corey J. Corbin.

Correction

Sharon High senior Cody Buchanan qualified for Saturday’s PIAA Class AA Cross Country Championships. In the results printed at last weekend’s District 10 Championships, Wilmington’s Zack Paden placed 20th in 18:32 and was listed as a qualifier; Buchanan ended 21st with the same time, but was not listed as a qualifier.

  • 5 area teams qualify for D-10 baseball playoffs

    Five area baseball teams have qualified for the District 10 playoffs — Grove City, Kennedy Catholic, Sharpsville, West Middlesex and Wilmington.
    In the Class A semifinals, Kennedy Catholic faces Cochranton at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Northwestern High School. Rocky Grove faces Eisenhower in the other semifinal game.

    For the 2nd time this week, a District 10 track & field team title could be decided by a pair of Mercer County contingents.
    Just as Hickory and Grove City girls contested the Class AAA crown Wednesday night, so, too, are the Hickory and West Middlesex boys anticipating vying for Saturday’s AA title.

    ä Reynolds 4, Grove City 1 — At Transfer, Neal Engstrom fired a complete-game 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks in lifting the Raiders (9-8) past the Eagles (14-6).
    Ryan Grace was tagged with the loss for Grove City. He struck out 6 batters, issued no walks and gave up 7 hits in going the distance.

    Hickory High girls — the defending PIAA Class AA titlists — will test the best from the biggest. And the Lady Hornets hope to give as good as they get from the 6-county competition.

    With an impending storm blowing in above Johnny Pepe Field time was limited, so Ryan Grace greedily gobbled up putouts.
    Grove City High’s Grace gave up only 3 base hits, and the visiting Eagles eased to an abbreviated 4-0, 5-inning win over Sharon Friday afternoon.

    The annual Mercer County Track & Field Invitational will be held at Hickory High’s Hornet Stadium Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
    Competing are all Mercer County teams, Class AAA and AA, as well as Slippery Rock. The meet serves as a warm-up to the District 10 championships set next week at Harbor Creek High.

    It was a tense Tuesday in Tiger-town.
    Twenty-four hours removed from a 1-run Region 2-AA loss at New Wilmington, Sharon High’s baseball team could not afford another setback, otherwise its postseason aspirations were alleviated.
    Conversely, region pacesetting Sharpsville could have secured the crown with a win, and the Blue Devils dashed to an early 3-0 lead.

  • Roundup: WM sweeps Oil Country Track & Field Invite

    West Middlesex swept the team titles on Saturday at the Oil Country Invitational at Oil City High School on Saturday.
    Coach Bob Morris’ Ms. Reds accumulated 113 points to grab the crown, followed by Lakeview (107.5), Franklin (84), Meadville (74) and Corry (69.5).
