ä Brookfield 33, Youngstown Christian School 7 — At Addison Field, the home-standing and undefeated Warriors found themselves in a rare situation - trailing after the first quarter, 7-6..
But the rest of the game belonged to the Warriors of Coach Randy Clark as they rolled to their 9th straight win on the season.
Ryan Mosora scored on a 95-yard interception return in the opening stanza, but Darien Townsend returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a score and the PAT kick put YCS (6-2) on top, 7-6.
However, the Warriors dominated the rest of the way. Mosora scored two more times on runs of 15 and 5 yards, while Joe Clark scored on a 39-yard pass from Jimmy Quinlan. Other Brookfield points came on a 29-yard field goal by Jeremy Quinlan and a safety when a muffed snap bounced out of the end zone.
The Warriors, top-ranked team in their Division IV region, will close out the regular season next weekend at LaBrae.
ä Sharpsville 42, Lakeview 0 — At McCracken Field, the Blue Devils (5-1, 7-1) had plenty to celebrate Friday night — namely senior night and coach Paul Piccirilli’s 150th career victory.
Yet, ‘Pic’ was more concerned about his charges locking up at least second place in Region 1A with the victory.
“It’s a big win, because it solidifies second place (in the region) and tells us who we can go scout next week,” said Piccirilli (150-50). “I was impressed with our team. This was the best we’ve played all year on both sides of the ball. We’re starting to put it together a little bit more.”
Piccirilli’s offensive line of Kaleb Robertson, Cody Hughes, P.J Campboli, Zach Stafford and Jacob Llewellyn deserves much of the credit for paving the way to a 353-yard offensive output that included scores from 5 different Blue Devils.
“When you come from Wilmington and you do OK against their line,” Piccirilli said. “And that’s what we did, OK. They’re the best line I’ve ever seen. Then, you come against Lakeview — who has size, but doesn’t have the strength or the quickness Wilmington has — made it a little easier on us. If we would’ve played Lakeview in front of Wilmington, it might have been a different story.”
Oddly enough, Tyler Luchey didn’t score Friday, but may have had the biggest impact on the outcome. The Blue Devil receiver pulled in 5 Bryan Stafford passes for 140 yards, returned a punt 59-yards to set up a score and picked off a pass.
“You come across that type of athlete once in five or six years,” Piccirilli said. “He’s super. He just has savvy no matter where he plays. We’re going to get him the ball one way or another.”
Sharpsville grabbed an early 14-0 lead on scoring runs from Stafford (5 yards) and Joey Pagliaroli (11yards) before Ross Llewellyn posted 14- and 1-yard TD runs in the second quarter.
Derrick Odem (21 yards) and George Keck (6 yards) scored to envoke the mercy rule for the Blue Devils.
Offensively, Llwellyn (10 carries for 66 yards) and Pagliaroli (8 for 54) kept the Sharpsville offense balanced as Stafford threw for 154 yards on 7-of-13 passing.
“We give (Stafford) a lot more opportunity now,” Piccirilli said. “He sees the field really well. He understands what’s going on. Our offensive coordinator Len Grandy does a great job with them. Everybody is on the same page. We’re doing a lot of things in practice now that we didn’t think we’d get to with losing Popatak and Joey Flynn.”
The Sailors (3-2, 5-3) — who’s playoff status took a severe hit with the loss and Farrell’s 20-8 win over Conneaut Area — had difficulty moving the ball on Sharpsville’s defense, accumulating just 140 yards of total offense.
The Devils keyed on Lakeview junior running back Blake Reddick, who was limited to a season-low 65 yards rushing on 14 carries.
“Everyone on our team was looking for ‘six,’ ” Piccirilli said. “That’s all we cared about. We were forcing them to do something (passing the football) that they’re not real comfortable with. You have to take ‘six’ out of the ballgame before you do anything else against this Lakeview team.”
Lakeview starting linebacker Kyle Canon had to be carted off the field with a right leg injury just two plays into the game.
“(Sharpsville’s Cody Hughes) was a bear against us,” Lakeview coach Dan York said. “We couldn’t down block him. That hurt the offense quite a bit. ä Hickory 54, Saegertown 0 — At Saegertown, the red-hot Hickory Hornets jumped to a 27-0 first quarter lead and never looked back in demolishing the Panthers.
Hickory senior star DeShawn Coleman rushed for 143 yards on only 6 carries and scored 4 touchdowns on runs of 19, 24, 53 and 37 yards. He has 1,098 yards on the season and has crossed the goal line 19 times.
Louis Derloni tacked on a pair of TDs on runs of 8 and 1 yards, while De’quan Lewis hit paydirt on a 66 yard sprint and Kenny Ezi-Ashi on a 15-yard run. Ezi-Ashi ended with 106 yards on 11 totes.
Anthony Cannone made 6 of 8 extra-point kicks, filling in for Hickory’s outstanding legman Jordan Wombacker who reportedly suffered a pre-game injury.
Coach Bill Brest’s defending District 10 AA champion Hornets upped their Region 2-AA record to 5-1 and overall mark to 7-1. Saegertown fell to 0-6, 1-7.
ä Grove City 42, Titusville 6 — At Grove City, the Eagles of coach Jeff Bell routed the visiting Rockets as they continued to warm up for a playoff run at the season’s end.
The Eagles, who dropped to Class AA after winning the District 10 AAA crown last season, are 5-1 in Region 3-AA and 7-1 overall. Barring upsets, Grove City, Hickory and Wilmington are expected to finish tied for the region lead.
Titusville (1-5, 2-6) was no match for the Eagles who built a 35-0 halftime lead to put the mercy rule into effect for the entire second half.
Foster Reznor scored two touchdowns on a 27-yard run and 27-yard pass from Jared Graham, while Harold Price also hit paydirt twice on runs of 20 and 23 yards. Ethan Yalch scored on a 31-yard interception return and Chad Williams on a 31-yard sprint. Dylan Motta converted on all 6 PAT kicks.
Xavier DeRose scored the lone TD for Titusville.
Grove City closes out the regular season next Friday at Sharon.
ä Mercer 21, Keystone 14 — At Knox, the visiting Mustangs held off a late charge by the District 9 club for the victory.
Keystone drove to the 15-yard lane in the waning moments of the game, but Mustang Walter Haines pulled in his second interception of the contest to seal the deal.
Quarterback Logan Clarke got Mercer on the board with a 1-yard run, but Keystone countered with a 4-yard TD pass from Austin Chambers to Dustin Wolbert.
Austin Slagle scored on a 1-yard run and T.J. Peters tallied on a 33-yard pass from Clarke. After that score, Chase Hoffman’s third PAT kick put Mercer up 21-7.
However, the hosts scored in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run by Matt Black, setting up the late game heroics by Haines.
Luke Leonard led the Mercer rushing attack with 110 yards on 13 carries. Clarke passed for 104 yards and totals 1,017 for the season.
Mercer is 2-6, while Keystone is also 2-6.
ä Wilmington 48, Sharon 21 — At New Wilmington, the host Hounds were tied at 7-7 in the first period, before rattling off four straight touchdowns to pull away in the Region 3-AA contest.
Coach Terry Verrelli’s Hounds (5-1 in region, 6-2) scored first on a 7-yard run by Tyler Donati, but Sharon’s Jesse Rodgers evened the score on a 4-yard burst. Then Wilmington pulled way with Alex Patton hitting paydirt on a 6-yard run, Nic Pugh tallying on a 4-yard run and 14-yard pass from Cody Llewellyn, and Donati scoring on a 7-yard sprint.
Other scores in the game for Wilmington came on an 8-yard run by Pugh and 5-yarder by Patton. For Sharon, Nate Jacoway scored on a 4-yard pass from Rogers and Wanya Smith-Austin scored on a 22-yard Rodgers aerial.
ä West Middlesex 55, Kennedy Catholic 20 — At West Middlesex, Luke Patten went over 1,000 yards rushing for the season and scored 2 touchdowns in leading the Big Reds (5-0, 7-1) past KC (1-4, 1-7). WM clinched at least a share of the Region 1 championship with the win.
WM led 29-6 after the opening quarter, 49-14 at halftime and cruised to the victory.
Patten rushed for 141 yards on only 9 carries and scored on runs of 3 and 15 yards. He now has 1,041 yards this season.
WM quarterback Trey Staunch also had a big game as he tossed a pair of TD passes and ran for another. Staunch, who was 5-of-14 for 74 yards, tossed scoring strikes to Sage Pope (16 yards) and Eric Lucich (25 yards) and scored on a 1-yard run. Staunch also booted 3 PATs.
Also scoring for the Big Reds were Dillon Fair on a 30-yard interception return, Dom Pape on a 4-yard run and Michael Gladysz on a 19-yard run.
Kennedy Catholic quarterback Brennan Wassil and Jacob Leipheimer hooked up for a pair of touchdowns. They connected on scoring strikes of 20 and 34 yards. Wassil finished 8-of-20 for 104 yards with 2 picks.
Jeff Thompkins had the other score for KC when he scooped up a fumble and rumbled 25 yards for a score.
ä Farrell 20, Conneaut 18 — At Farrell, the Steelers of coach Jarrett Samuels held off a late rally by the visitors to pull out the victory.
Farrell (3-2 in Region 1-A, 5-3) had a pair of touchdowns from Dwayne burns on runs of 5 and 59 yards, while Malik Graham scored on a 31-yard pass from Joe Goudy. Austin Pickens nailed 2 PAT kicks.
Burns rushed for 120 yards on 16 carries.
No scoring or stats were reported for Conneaut (1-4, 4-4).
