MERCER COUNTY —
Rosy Hearns became Hickory High’s second female golfer to qualify for the PIAA Championships.
On Monday at par-72 Toms Run in the western regional qualifier, Hearns had an 82, and finished 4th following a tiebreaker playoff.
North East’s Megan Moylan mustered medalist honors, shooting 73. Moylan was followed by Maggie Foust (Central Valley), who shot 78. Hearns tied with Kristy Hanes (Elk County Catholic) and Maddy McDaniel (Central Valley) for 3rd. McDaniel won the playoff.
Hearns follows in the footsteps of Kellie Gustas in Hickory High girls’ golf annals, coach Craig Antush said. Hearns will compete in the state championships next Monday and Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, York.
“Extremely (proud),” Antush, via telephone, replied. “I’m a little at a loss for words. ... It’s great for her and I’m happy for her. She was determined to pursue this goal each year, and this year she finally got to break through.”
Windy morning conditions settled down on the cloudy, but pleasant day, and Antush assessed, “(Hearns) was up and down. She missed a few putts ... ”
Hearns’ Hickory teammate, junior Alena Lancia, did not make the cut for state, shooting 100.
“This is the first time we’ve had two compete in the western Pennsylvania qualifier,” Antush noted. “It was quite an experience to get to watch them both get this far. I’m extremely proud.”
Antush is anticipating next week’s trip noting, “I’m looking forward to to state. It’ll be a new experience for all of us. We’ll see what transpires.”
CROSS COUNTRY
The annual Region 1 championships will take place Saturday at Pymatuning State Park, west of Jamestown, on Route 322.
Meet director David Frew said the girls’ and boys’ varsity races are scheduled to being at 10:45 and 11:30 a.m., respectively. Girls’ and boys’ junior high races, 9 and 9:30 a.m., and a combined girls’ and boys’ junior varsity race at 10 a.m.
Frew cautioned spectators that a PennDOT-related construction project is taking place at a railroad crossing between downtown Greenville and Thiel College, along Routes 18-North and 58 West. It is scheduled for completion by Saturday, but a detour is a possibility.
Signs at the park office entrance will direct specators to parking, Frew said.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
ä Kennedy Catholic 3, Jamestown 0 — At Hermitage, the host Lady Golden Eagles (8-2) eased to a 25-17, 25-22, 25-18 sweep.
KC: Brie Dickson 9 digs, 14 kills; Yasir Muhammad 19 assists, 8 serving points (5 aces); Sarah Summers 8 digs; Emilee Taylor 9 points (5 aces); Noelle Millan 5 digs. Jamestown: No stats reported. JV: Kennedy Catholic, 15-25, 26-24, 15-6.
ä Wilmington 3, Lakeview 0 — At New Wilmington, the host Lady Greyhounds garnered a 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 sweep.
Lakeview (7-3, 7-5): Rachel McKean 10 kills; Sam Womer 9 blocks; Taylor Reed 13 assists; Wilmington: No stats reported. JV: Lakeview, 25-18, 25-17.
BOYS SOCCER
ä Hickory 3, Franklin 1 — At Hornet Stadium, Evan Montgomery tallied twice for host Hickory (6-8-2) in the Region 2 match. Also for Hickory, Isaac Sutley scored, Zack Walters assisted on 2 goals, and goalkeeper Donté Green made 9 saves.
Hickory had a 15-12 advantage in shots on goal.
Franklin scored an “own goal.” Keeper Noah Jones made a handful of saves.
ä Mercer 8, Commodore Perry 0 — At Lamor Road, the host Mustangs clinched the Region 1-A crown.
Will Juergens tallied twice and assisted on a score, and
Matt Juergens and Chase Hoffman each added a goal and assist. Also for Mercer (8-0-1 region, 12-1-1 overall), Trenton Fowler, Preston Hoover, Nathan Breese and Quinton Hinkson garnered goals. Keeper Alan Rabold recorded his 13th shutout this season. Mercer outshot the visiting Panthers 21-1.
GIRLS SOCCER
ä DuBois 1, Mercer 0 — At DuBois, in the 77th minute, Emily Titler’s direct kick from approximately 25 yards served as the match’s lone goal, Mercer coach Eric Well reported.
Mercer goalkeeper Analise Whenry made 20 saves, while DuBois’ Casey Wilcox pitched the shutout.

Hickory boys edge WM for D-10 Class AA Track team title
HARBORCREEK — Hickory High co-head coach Mark Slezak referenced the term “exponential” in explaining the four-fold heart-felt feeling of having a relay team qualify for the PIAA Championships.
That sentiment seemed to summarize Mercer County’s performance during Saturday’s annual District 10 Class AA Track & Field Championships. -
5 area teams qualify for D-10 baseball playoffs
Five area baseball teams have qualified for the District 10 playoffs — Grove City, Kennedy Catholic, Sharpsville, West Middlesex and Wilmington.
In the Class A semifinals, Kennedy Catholic faces Cochranton at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Northwestern High School. Rocky Grove faces Eisenhower in the other semifinal game. -

For the 2nd time this week, a District 10 track & field team title could be decided by a pair of Mercer County contingents.
Just as Hickory and Grove City girls contested the Class AAA crown Wednesday night, so, too, are the Hickory and West Middlesex boys anticipating vying for Saturday’s AA title. -

ä Reynolds 4, Grove City 1 — At Transfer, Neal Engstrom fired a complete-game 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks in lifting the Raiders (9-8) past the Eagles (14-6).
Ryan Grace was tagged with the loss for Grove City. He struck out 6 batters, issued no walks and gave up 7 hits in going the distance. -

If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Cliché though that is, it will be borne out today at the annual District 10 Class AAA Track & Field Championships.
Hickory High girls — the defending PIAA Class AA titlists — will test the best from the biggest. And the Lady Hornets hope to give as good as they get from the 6-county competition. -

With an impending storm blowing in above Johnny Pepe Field time was limited, so Ryan Grace greedily gobbled up putouts.
Grove City High’s Grace gave up only 3 base hits, and the visiting Eagles eased to an abbreviated 4-0, 5-inning win over Sharon Friday afternoon. -
HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: County track meet set Saturday at Hickory
The annual Mercer County Track & Field Invitational will be held at Hickory High’s Hornet Stadium Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
Competing are all Mercer County teams, Class AAA and AA, as well as Slippery Rock. The meet serves as a warm-up to the District 10 championships set next week at Harbor Creek High. -
Roundup: Sharon baseball squad edges Sharpsville, 5-4
It was a tense Tuesday in Tiger-town.
Twenty-four hours removed from a 1-run Region 2-AA loss at New Wilmington, Sharon High’s baseball team could not afford another setback, otherwise its postseason aspirations were alleviated.
