Roundup: Casalnova to play for D-10 crown; Mercer romps CV

GIRLS TENNIS

Grove City’s Hana Casalnova will square off against Mercyhurst Prep’s Maggie McLaughlin at 3 p.m. Monday for the District 10 Class AA singles championship.

McLaughlin, the defending District 10 champ, was the No. 1 seed as the D-10 Tournament got underway at the Pennbriar Racquet Club in Erie on Saturday. Casalnova is seeded No. 2.

In Saturday’s semifinals, McLaughlin defeated Wilmington’s Shelby Guarnieri, 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the finals while Casalnova defeated Fairview’s Christina Barnes, the No. 3 seed, 6-4, 6-3.

Sharon’s Kelsey Ferlin, the No. 8 seed, made it to the quarterfinals on Saturday before bowing out to Guarnieri, 8-1. Casalnova defeated Nicole Winkler of Mercyhurst Prep in the quarters, 8-3.

Kennedy Catholic’s Michelle Bober bowed out in the 2nd round, 8-4, to Karin Denton of Gen. McLane, who was seeded 6th.

Locals that bowed out in the 1st round were Greenville’s Diana Fraser, GC’s Kayla Sample and Meredith Trent, Hickory’s Nicole Neider, Anna Wallace and Lauren Zickar, Kennedy Catholic’s Jacque Kirila and Megan O’Malley, Sharon’s Rebecca Rueberger and Wilmington’s Abbey Kennedy and Kait Martin.

Sharon’s Dana Cerroni was ousted in one of the 3 preliminary round matches.

FOOTBALL

ä Mercer 40, Conneaut Valley 0 — At Conneautville, Kyle Mariacher rushed for 142 yards on 14 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns as the Mustangs (3-2, 4-3) stampeded the Indians (2-4, 2-5) in a Region 1-A matchup.

Mariacher scored on runs of 29 and 1 yards.

Mercer quarterback Andrew Erdos was 3-of-5 for 37 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 88 yards. Erdos’ touchdown pass was a 14-yarder to Rawlins Huntley.

J.T. Mannozzi (2 yards), Herbie Hennegan (3 yards) and Mitchell Shealy (1 yards) all scored on touchdown runs for the Mustangs.

Mercer rumbled for 334 yards on the ground while the Mustang defense limited Conneaut Valley to a total of 156 yards.

BOYS SOCCER

ä Slippery Rock 4, Hickory 0 — Under the lights at Hornet Stadium, Dan Jeon scored a pair of goals as the Rockets blanked the Hornets (10-3).

Jack Cravener and Braden Sloan notched the other goals for Slippery Rock.

Ty Little made 14 saves to post the shutout in goal.

Hickory’s Nick Somerfield was credited with 6 saves.

JV: Hickory, 3-0.

GIRLS SOCCER

ä Kennedy Catholic 3, Pymatuning Valley 0 — At Pymatuning, Chelsea Bernat scored 2 goals in lifting the Lady Golden Eagles to victory.

Anna Bonomo posted the other goal for KC.

Angela Balint made 9 saves in goal to earn the shutout.

ä Hickory 1, Titusville 0 — At Hornet Stadium, the Hornettes improved to 12-2-1 by edging the Lady Rockets of Titusville.

Alyssa McClure notched the game’s lone goal off an assist from Lauren Costello.

Harley Hrifko registered 6 saves between the pipes in the shutout.

VOLLEYBALL

Maplewood Tourney

The Grove City High volleyball team posted a 7-3 record on Saturday at the Maplewood Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals.

In morning pool play, GC beat Cambridge Springs (25-15) and Titusville (25-20, 25-19) and lost to Gen. McLane (25-17) and Meadville (25-16).

In afternoon pool play, the Lady Eagles swept Cambridge Springs (25-21, 25-23) and Conneaut Lake (25-22, 25-21).

In the quarterfinals, GC dropped a 25-17 decision to Clarion, which was recently ranked No. 1 in the state in Class A.

“This was the best our team played all year,” said GC coach Shawnee Denbow.
