Roundup: GC wins Buhl Farm Tennis Invite

---- — Led by singles winners Meredith Trent, Abby Casalnova and Courtney Corban and the doubles duo of Molly Somora-Brittany Foringer, Grove City High girls garnered the 15th annual Buhl Farm Tennis Invitational title.

At Buhl Farm Park the Lady Eagles (33) eased to the win by outdistancing Hickory (20), Kennedy Catholic (19), Wilmington (18), Greenville (16), Oil City (8) and Sharon and Franklin (6).

Alanna Elliott (Wilmington) won the other singles crown, while the tandems of Jensen Kirila-Stephanie Moore (Kennedy Catholic) and rachel Mettee-Lauren McGonigle (Hickory) also triumphed.

Tournament director Sue McLaughlin reported 106 players competed in the day-long event.

ä 4th Singles: Corban (GC) def. Cheyenne VanTassel (G), 10-3. Semifinals: Corban def. Avianna Danta (KC), 8-3; VanTassel def. Jenny Williams (OC), 8-6.

ä 1st Doubles: Kirila-Moore (KC) def. Lauren Kizak-Nikki Morgenstern (H), 10-4. Semifinals: Kirila-Moore def. Aubriana Dellibovi-Marissa Monnin (S), 8-7; Kizak-Morgenstern def. Brooke Marini-Cameron Leary (G), 8-3.

ä 2nd Doubles: Mettee-McGonigle (H) def. Nikki McCowan-Alexi Donati (W), 10-6. Semifinals: Mettee-McGonigle def. Alex Hughey-Vonita Hall (S), 8-1; McCowan-Donati def. Alex Hudson-Abby Lenhart (KC), 8-6.

ä 3rd Doubles: Somora-Foringer (GC) def. Hannah Johnson-Lauren Faber (G), 8-7(7-5). Semifinals: Somora-Foringer def. Megan Fisher-Kaela Reinhart (G), 8-3; Faber-Johnson def. Nikki Marrone-Johnna Scheuermann (H), 8-7(7-3).

OHSAA Girls Sectional Tournament

Brookfield’s Autumn Kirila advanced to today’s singles finals of the OHSAA Sectional tournament.

Kirila captured a trio of wins Wednesday at Boardman High, and will face Warren-John F. Kennedy’s Lauren Lee, 4 p.m. today in the finals, Warriors’ coach Kevin Boyd reported. Kirila KO’d Liberty’s Meryl Schor in a pair of tiebreakers in that 3rd-round win.

Ashley Kirila won a pair of opening-round matches before bowing in the 3rd round at 2nd singles, while Ana Zarlinski, at 3rd singles suffered an opening-round setback. She and partner Sharlene Shebeck, at 1st doubles, also were ousted in the 1st round.

At Butala Stadium, the teams tusseled for 100 minutes of scoreless action.

Gavin Cianci shut out the Mustangs to help key Kennedy (4-1-1 region, 9-1-1), coach Bill Dodd reported.

ä Sharon 2, Grove City 1 — At Tiger Stadium, the host Tigers triumphed on goals by Dylan Cerroni and Josh Nichols. Nichols assisted Cerroni’s score, also. Goalie Vince Shaffer made 5 saves for Sharon (5-4-3).

Alex Boarts scored for GC, but Sharon’s shots-on-goal margin was 20-6.

JV: Grove City, 2-0.

BOYS GOLF

ä Greenville 166, Rey-nolds 179 —
At Tam O’Shanter, the Trojans and Raiders, co-region champs with 8-2 records, played to determine who advances to the District 10 Team Championships Saturday in Mead-ville. Chad Ferguson shot a 39 for the Trojans while Zach Taylor carded a 42 for the Raiders.

Greenville: Ferguson 39, Kendal King 41, Dan Addison 42, Nick Dietrich 45. Reynolds: Taylor 42, Travis Breese, Wes McDonald 45s, Ryan Sherbondy 47.
