MERCER COUNTY —
Led by Mercer High’s Nate Guiler, 9 Region 1 golfers qualified for the upcoming District 10 Championships, Oct. 9 at Grove City Country Club.
At Tam O’Shanter Golf Course on Wednesday, Guiler garnered a medalist round of 81.
Guiler was followed by Jamestown’s Ronnie Meals and Greenville’s Daniel Addison, 82; Greenville’s Kendal King and Kennedy Catholic’s Jacob Wilson, 83; Jamestown’s Keamus Schuhlen and Greenville’s Bryar Wentling, 84, and Greenville’s Chad Ferguson and Lakeview’s Casey Greggs, 85. Lakeview’s Sam Magargee’s 86 earned him a berth as an alternate.
The remainder of Wednesday’s field included: Nick Deitrich (Greenville) and Ryan Sherbondy and Wes McDonald (Reynolds), 87; John McGonigle (Kennedy Catholic) and Travis Reese (Reynolds), 88; Jake Reaugh (Jamestown), 89; Paul Spondike (Kennedy Catholic), and Jacob Reimold and Zack Taylor (Reynolds), 90; Teddy Haaz (Kennedy Catholic) and Peter Timashenka (Mercer), 93;
Mark Peters (Mercer) 94; Jonas Reaugh (Jamestown), 95; Colton McCright (Greenville), 97, and Keith Kepner (Lakeview), 103.
GIRLS SOCCER
ä Kennedy Catholic 5, Sharpsville 2 — At McCullough Run, South Pymatuning Twp., the visiting Lady Golden Eagles (2-2 region 3-5 overall) earned the road win.
Keying Kennedy was Monica Riggle’s pair of goals. Also, Anna Benson, Alyson Derrick and Tawney Godfrey garnered goals for KC and keeper Shelby McElhinny made 16 saves. Grace Izenas, Benson, Riggle and Hennessy Zolnier were credited with assists, also.
For Sharpsville (1-2-1, 2-5-1), Rose Stoyer, assisted by Aislinn Frazier, and Ashley Hall, assisted by Stoyer, scored for Sharpsville. Goalkeeper Megan Whalen made 7 saves, also.
ä Wilmington 4, West Middlesex 1 — At West Middlesex, the visiting Lady Hounds harvested the road win as Anna Hartwell and Kyler Lum tallied twice apiece. Lum and Madison Huff had assists for Wilmington (4-0 region, 4-4 overall).
Shae Romain, assisted by Delaney David and Searra McElrath, scored for West Middlesex (0-4, 2-6-1), while goalkeeper Mackenzie Thompson made 13 saves.

BOYS SOCCER
ä Franklin 3, Grove City 1 — With Grove City (5-4) dominating field play on Tuesday, the Franklin Knights converted 60 percent of their shots on goal to defeat the Eagles Tuesday.
Colton Byers, Logan Mooney and Ty Mooney scored for the Knights. Alex Boarts scored for the Eagles.
Grove City registered 38 offensive attacks to 14 by Franklin. The Eagles had the edge in corner kicks (5-2) and shots-on-goal (10-5). Noah Jones made 8 saves for Franklin; Grove City goalie Jed Grimm stopped 2 shots.
ä Slippery Rock 1, Sharon 0 — On Tuesday at Tiger Stadium, Cole McCandless’ 1st-half goal, assisted by Aaron Gercken, accounted for the match’s lone score. Goalkeeper Zach Latorre made 3 saves for Slippery Rock; Vince Shaffer 4 for Sharon.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
ä Sharpsville 3, Lakeview 0 — At Stoneboro, the visiting Blue Darlings defeated Lakeview, 25-10, 25-15, 25-12.
Sharpsville: Paige Scurpa 16 points, 12 kills; Megan Davis 7 points, 5 kills, 5 digs; Rachel D’Auria 5 kills; Alex Ferrara 13 poitns, 6 digs; Kristen Scurpa 7 kills, 25 assists. Lakeview (3-3): Taylor Reed 15 assists; Tia Ray 7 digs, 7 kills; Rachel McKean 9 kills. JV: Sharpsville, 25-20, 22-25, 15-5.
Sharpsville skipper Scott Scurpa noted his Blue Darlings (6-0) will host Conneaut Area today at approximately 7 p.m. (following the 6 p.m. JV match).
Conneaut — a merger of Linesville, Conneaut Lake and Conneaut Valley — is ranked 8th in the state in Class AA, while Sharpsville is rated 3rd in A, Scurpa said. Last year as Linesville, the Lady Lions won the PIAA Class A championship.
“We’re looking forward to the challenge of playing a high-caliber team, and I’m hoping the girls come out ready to take on that challenge,” Scurpa said.

Playoffs: GC, Hounds win; Reynolds, Sharpsville softball advance
The District 10 playoffs kicked off on Tuesday for 4 area baseball teams and 5 softball squads.
In Class A softball, Reynolds edged West Middlesex, 5-4, in an 8-inning thriller while Sharpsville ousted Rocky Grove, 5-0. In Class AA, Northwestern beat Wilmington, 9-5, and Harbor Creek defeated Mercer, 4-3. -
Hickory boys edge WM for D-10 Class AA Track team title
HARBORCREEK — Hickory High co-head coach Mark Slezak referenced the term “exponential” in explaining the four-fold heart-felt feeling of having a relay team qualify for the PIAA Championships.
That sentiment seemed to summarize Mercer County’s performance during Saturday’s annual District 10 Class AA Track & Field Championships. -
5 area teams qualify for D-10 baseball playoffs
Five area baseball teams have qualified for the District 10 playoffs — Grove City, Kennedy Catholic, Sharpsville, West Middlesex and Wilmington.
In the Class A semifinals, Kennedy Catholic faces Cochranton at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Northwestern High School. Rocky Grove faces Eisenhower in the other semifinal game. -
Hickory, WM boys to collide at D-10 AA Track & Field Championships
For the 2nd time this week, a District 10 track & field team title could be decided by a pair of Mercer County contingents.
Just as Hickory and Grove City girls contested the Class AAA crown Wednesday night, so, too, are the Hickory and West Middlesex boys anticipating vying for Saturday’s AA title. -
Roundup: Reynolds baseball tops GC; Sharpsville, Wilmington softball teams win
ä Reynolds 4, Grove City 1 — At Transfer, Neal Engstrom fired a complete-game 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks in lifting the Raiders (9-8) past the Eagles (14-6).
Ryan Grace was tagged with the loss for Grove City. He struck out 6 batters, issued no walks and gave up 7 hits in going the distance. -
GC girls 3-peat at District 10 Class AAA Track & Field Championships
HARBORCREEK— Some athletes seeded 1st in four events would feel pressure. For Grove City High senior Daniel Jaskowak, it’s an opportunity for name recognition.
“I kind’ve like it. It’s cool, because people know who you are,” related Jaskowak, who won 3 events during Wednesday’s District 10 Class AAA Track & Field Championships. -
Hickory, GC girls collide at D-10 Class AAA Track & Field Championships
If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Cliché though that is, it will be borne out today at the annual District 10 Class AAA Track & Field Championships.
Hickory High girls — the defending PIAA Class AA titlists — will test the best from the biggest. And the Lady Hornets hope to give as good as they get from the 6-county competition. -

Roundup: Grace, GC beat Sharon, 4-0, in 5 innings
With an impending storm blowing in above Johnny Pepe Field time was limited, so Ryan Grace greedily gobbled up putouts.
Grove City High’s Grace gave up only 3 base hits, and the visiting Eagles eased to an abbreviated 4-0, 5-inning win over Sharon Friday afternoon. -
HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: County track meet set Saturday at Hickory
The annual Mercer County Track & Field Invitational will be held at Hickory High’s Hornet Stadium Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
Competing are all Mercer County teams, Class AAA and AA, as well as Slippery Rock. The meet serves as a warm-up to the District 10 championships set next week at Harbor Creek High. - More Sports Headlines
