Friday marked the midway point of the regular season in District 10 with six other key region games taking place.
In Region 1-A, Lakeview beat Kennedy Catholic, 27-0, in Stoneboro and West Middlesex rolled past the Mustangs, 44-13, in Mercer.
In Region 3-AA, Grove City scored late to edge Greenville, 19-14; Wilmington routed winless Saegertown, 49-6; Hickory rolled past the Rockets, 38-0, at Carter Field in Titusville and the up-and-coming Reynolds Raiders defeated Sharon, 21-14, at Tiger Stadium.
In Ohio, Brookfield remained undefeated with a 58-23 victory over Western Reserve Academy at Hudson High School.
The following were reported to The Herald:
ä Reynolds 21, Sharon 14 — At Sharon, the Reynolds Raiders of coach Jerry Pacifico displayed a powerful running attack to maintain a tie for the lead in the Region 3-AA standings at 3-1.
The attack was led by Mike Millero who ran for 188 yards on 36 carries and scored 3 TDs. Kellen Gursky gained 47 yards on 15 carries and Levi Stoyer 44 yards on 4 totes.
Both teams had excellent chances to score early. Reynolds came out strong and drove deep into Sharon territory, but the Tigers defense tightened and the Raiders turned the ball over on downs.
Sharon came right back and a long pass connection between quarterback Jesse Rodgers and Nate Jacoway moved the Tigers into the Reynolds red zone. However, the Reynolds defense also rose up and stopped Sharon with help of a Tigers penalty as well.
Midway through the second period, Sharon broke onto the scoreboard. Shortly after recovering a Reynolds fumble, Sharon’s Rodgers connected with Carnell Hawkins for a 67-yard pass play to paydirt. The point-after kick by Evan Gill made it 7-0.
But Reynolds bounced back and took advantage of a botched punt play to gain possession on the Sharon 14-yard line. A few plays later, running back Mike Millero cracked in from 4 yards out. But the PAT kick missed and Sharon’s lead held up through intermission.
In the third period, Reynolds went on top when Millero drove into the end zone from 5 yards out. Millero also carried for a 2-point conversion to put the Raiders up, 14-7.
Millero tacked on another score on a 12-yard run in the final frame and Joe Yarzab booted the point after.
Still, Sharon battled back. With about 3 minutes remaining, Rodgers scored on a 14-yard run and Gill’s PAT kick cut the Raider margin to 21-14.
Sharon had one more possession in the game, but went 4-and-out and Reynolds ran out the clock.
ä West Middlesex 34, Mercer 13 — At Mercer, the Big Reds of coach Jason McElhaney continued to roll over the opposition in Region 1-A action.
Since a tough opening season loss to Wilmington, the Reds have been very impressive, moving to 3-0 in the region and 4-1 overall.
“It was a good win for us,” said McElhaney. “That’s four in a row. We were a little sloppy in some parts that we need to clean up and we still have too many penalties.
“But the kids played hard. We have won here (Mercer) in a really long time — I think 2006. It feels good to come here and leave happy.”
Luke Patten scored a pair of touchdowns for the Reds on a 64-yard run and 21-yard pass from Trey Staunch. Staunch threw two other TD passes to Sage Pope, good for 21 yards and Jeremy Jancso for 7 yards. Eric Lucich also hit paydirt on a 37-yard sprint.
Patten led the rushing attack with 135 yards on 15 totes.
For Mercer (0-4, 1-4), T.J. Peters scored on an 11-yard aerial from Logan Clarke and Evan Nan on an 18-yard pass from Clarke.
ä Hickory 38, Titusville 0 — At Titusville, the coach Bill Brest’s Hickory Hornets romped in the Region 3-AA clash. The win maintained a tie for the lead in the region at 3-1.
Hickory’s outstanding young kicker Jordan Wombacker got the scoring started with a 35-yard field goal in the first period and the Hornets (3-1, 4-1) never looked back.
DeShawn Coleman scored three touchdowns on runs of 10 and 65 yards and an 85-yard punt return. Calvin Pryts hit paydirt on a 23-yard fumble return and quarterback Matt Voytik sprinted in from 31 yards out. Wombacker tacked on 5 PAT kicks.
Dalton Linton and Anthony Cannone each had 5 tackles for Hickory, with Linton forcing the fumble that Pryts recovered and scored. DeQuan Lewis had an interception for the Hornets.
Titusville fell to 1-3, 2-3.
ä Wilmington 49, Saegertown 6 — At Wilmington, the Greyhounds built a 42-0 lead by intermission, setting the mercy rule into effect for the entire second half.
Leading the way for coach Terry Verrelli’s Hounds was outstanding running back Tyler Donati, who scored 4 touchdowns on runs of 31, 1, 47 and 85 yards.
Alex Patton sprinted 54 yards for a score; Donnie Watson tallied on a 29-yard aerial from Cody Llewellyn; and Joel Phillips closed out the Wilmington scoring with a 6 yard run.
For Saegertown, Anthony Taylor scored on a 17-yard pass from Ryan Kirdahy.
Wilmington moved to 3-1 in Region 3-AA action and 4-1 overall. The Panthers dropped to 0-4, 0-5.
ä Grove City 19, Greenville 14 — At Stewart Field in Greenville, the Eagles (3-1, 4-1) scored with 50 seconds left to edge the Trojans (2-2, 2-3) in a Region 3-AA clash.
Greenville went up 7-0 when Tyler Fattman returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and Casey Eells added the extra-point.
GC tied the game at 7-all in the 2nd quarter on a 7-yard TD run by Harold Price and Justin Fulkerson’s PAT.
The Eagles went up 13-7 early in the 3rd quarter on a 39-yard TD run by Chad Williams. The PAT failed.
Greenville took a 14-13 lead with 1:55 left in the 3rd on a 10-yard TD pass from Jacob Riffe to Luke Houpt and Eells’ PAT.
GC then scored the game-winner with 50 ticks left in the game on a 5-yard run by Foster Reznor. The 2-point conversion pass attempt was intercepted.
Price had 13 carries for 112 yards while Williams rushed for 108 on 11 totes. GC quarterback Jared Graham was 8-of-11 for 110 yards. Kyle Trinch pulled in 6 passes for 72 yards.
Fattman led the Trojans in rushing with 70 yards on 18 carries. Riffe was 4-of-9 for 19 yards and 2 picks. — Stats submitted by Herald correspondent Ryan Briggs.
ä Brookfield 58, Western Reserve Academy 23 — In a game played at Hudson High field, the Warriors of coach Randy Clark broke open a close game by exploding for 21 third-quarter points while shutting out Reserve for the entire second half. The two teams exchanged scores in the early going before the undefeated Warriors (6-0) broke it open.
Quarterback Jeremy Quinlan scored 4 TDs for the Warriors on runs of 13, 4, 29 and 7 yards. Ryan Mosora tallied 3 touchdowns on sprints of 8 and 41 yards as well as a 30-yard interception return.
Colin Harkulich also hit paydirt for Brookfield on a 4-yard pass from Quinlan.
Mosora rushed for 217 yards on 20 carries and went over the century mark for the season. He now has 1,012 yards.
The pass-happy Reserve (2-4) fired up 48 passes in the contest, connecting on 25 including 3 TDs.
ä Lakeview 27, Kennedy Catholic 0 — At Stoneboro, Blake Reddick rushed for 160 yards on 27 carries and 1 TD as the Sailors (3-0, 4-1) blanked KC (1-3, 1-4) in Region 1-A play.
Lakeview went up 8-0 in the 1st quarter on a 29-yard TD pass from Zach Bigley to Andrew Parimuha. Bigley then tossed a 2-point conversion pass to Zach VanDusen.
In the 2nd quarter, Bigley fired 7- and 3-yard TD passes to VanDusen as the Sailors went up 20-0. Both 2-point conversion runs on those scores failed.
Lakeview made it 27-0 with 3:51 left in the 4th quarter on a 34-yard TD run by Reddick. VanDusen booted the PAT.
Bigley finished 4-of-11 for 66 yards while VanDusen caught 3 passes for 37 yards. KC stats were not reported to The Herald.
