Roundup: Sharon girls beat GC; Sharpsville, Mercer, Hickory, Farrell, CP, KC and Wilmington win

GIRLS BASKETBALL

ä Sharon 55, Grove City 46 — At Grove City, the Lady Tigers (7-3, 14-3) put together a 20-point 3rd quarter after trailing the Lady Eagles (3-7, 9-8) at haltime to take the Region 5-AAA win.

The Lady Eagles erased an 11-0 Sharon lead to start the game for a 26-23 edge at the break. After the intermission, Sharon went on an 11-0 run before GC’s Kynisha Basham hit a field goal for the Lady Eagles’ first points of the 2nd half.

The Lady Tigers then went up by as many as 10 in the 4th quarter thanks to 8 points from McKenzie Black, 4 of which were from the charity stripe.

Brittany Benedetto led Sharon with 17 points and 8 rebounds, while Black grabbed 11 boards. Also, Kristen Johnson collected 10 caroms.

“The third quarter was the big one; we outscored them 20-8,” Lady Tigers’ taskmaster Gene Sarazen said. “We played good defense from there on out, made some big shots, and got some big contributions from some others, including Black and Kristen Johnson.

ä Sharpsville 44, Reynolds 36 — At Sharpsville, the host Blue Darlings’ defense yielded just 4 fourth-period points in registering the Region 2-AA win.

McKenzie Popatak popped in a game-high 15 points for Sharpsville (7-2, 13-5), while Jenna Grandy garnered 9 rebounds and Kristen Scurpa dished out a handful of assists.

For Reynolds (1-8, 4-12), Camille Parker produced 14 points and Emily Moroco mustered 11.

ä Mercer 45, West Middlesex 30 — At West Middlesex, the visiting Lady M’s muzzled Middlesex, allowing just 20 points during the game’s final 24 minutes en route to the Region 2-AA road win.

Claire Creasy connected for 14 points and Cassie Flannery fired in another 11 for Mercer (5-3, 9-7).

Kayla Shacklock scored a dozen for the Ms. Reds (3-6, 7-11).

ä Kennedy Catholic 45, Warren-JFK 27 — At Hermitage, Marina Wareham buried a trio of treys en route to 15 points to lead KC (14-3) past JFK.

The game featured a battle of first cousins in KC’s Brie Dickson and JFK’s Sarah Dickson. Brie bucketed 9 points; Sarah 4. Another local connection, Paige Klaric collected 8 points for the visiting Lady Eagles.

ä Hickory 54, Oil City 26 — At “The Hive” in Hermitage, the Lady Hornets (3-7, 6-11) flew out to a 20-4 lead after the opening quarter and never looked back in posting the Region 5-AAA rout.

Macy Horvath rifled in 20 points and grabbed 5 rebounds to lead Hickory while Ashley Marriott drained 4 treys en route to 15 points and had 5 boards.

Also for Hickory, Emily Szabo pulled down 7 rebounds and Liz Palumbo and Kalie Gargano dished out 4 and 3 assists, respectively.

Becca Weidle led the way for Oil City with 11 points.

ä Farrell 72, Rocky Grove 28 — At Rocky Grove, the Region 1-A pacesetting Lady Steelers scorched the nets for 33 second-period points en route to the rout of Rocky Grove.

Marrisa Carry collected a game-high 20 points for Farrell (6-0, 11-4), and D’Asia Chambers and Jalysa Archie added 17 and 14 points, respectively.

For Rocky Grove, Katie Bell bucketed 13 points, tossing in 2 treys.

ä Commodore Perry 37, Jamestown 24 — At Sheakleyville, the host Lady Panthers prevailed in the Region 1-A affair with a wire-to-wire win.

Jessica McClain collected a 13-point, 19-rebound double-double for the Lady Panthers (3-3, 4-15) of coach Bob Messina.

Alysha Giddings garnered 10 tallies for Jamestown (1-5, 7-11), but the Lady Muskies never mustered double figures in any one quarter.

ä Wilmington 56, Lakeview 31 — At New Wilmington, the Lady ’Hounds (5-3, 11-6) outscored Lakeview 34-13 in the 2nd half to notch the Region 2-AA win.

Haley Marett (14), Ashley Gardner (13) and Stephanie Kish (10) scored in double digits for Wilmington.

Cassie Legal led Lakeview (1-8, 2-16) with 11 points. Top scorer Fawn Miller was held to only 5 points.

ä Brookfield 41, Girard 30 — At Girard on Wednesday, the visiting Lady Warriors (2-5, 6-11) turned to the defense to carry the day in defeating Girard in an All-American Conference Blue Tier clash.

Paige Wallace sparked the Lady Warriors on offense with 19 points, while Wallace also pulled won 8 rebounds, as did Ashley Swezey.

Girard was paced by Katelynne Brainard with 10 points.

WRESTLING

ä Commodore Perry 37, Lakeview 36 — At Lakeview Wednesday, the visiting Panthers prevailed in a tight battle. Scoring pins for the Panthers were Brandon Collins (152) and Matt Scheimer (171). Shane Schliefer notched a fall for Lakeview. In one of the key matchups of the night, Perry’s Steve Ceremuga had a major decision over Tyler Lewis at 189.
