Roundup: Hickory girls soccer ties SR; KC tops WM

---- — ä Hickory 1, Slippery Rock 1 (2OT) — Under the lights at Hornet Stadium, the Region 2 champion Hornettes (13-1-1) and Rockets played to a tie.

Jackie White scored in the 1st half for Hickory off an assist (corner kick) by M.K. Bair. Marissa Siebka tied the game for Slippery Rock in the 2nd half.

Morgan McBride made 8 saves in goal for Hickory while the Lady Rockets’ Raquel Huff posted 9 saves between the pipes.

JV: No match.

ä Kennedy Catholic 4, West Middlesex 3 — At West Middlesex, Tawney Godfrey snapped a 3-3 tie by scoring the game-winning goal with 15 minutes left to play to lift KC (6-10) past the Ms. Reds (4-11-1).

Monica Riggle had a hat trick for KC and Stacy Goclano was credited with an assist.

Kayla Ballard, Kaitlyn Beck and Delaney David all scored for WM and Sarah Mild had an assist.

Shelby McElhinny made 6 saves in goal for the Lady Golden Eagles while Mackenzie Thompson registered 9 saves between the pipes for WM.

JV: WM, 1-0.

CROSS COUNTRY

Meet director David Frew noted a scheduling change in the order of events for Saturday’s annual District 10 Region 1-2 Cross Country Championships.

The girls’ and boys’ varsity races will commence at 8 and 9:45 a.m., respectively, followed by the junior high girls’ and boys’ at 10:30 and 11 a.m., respectively, and a combined girls-boys’ junior varsity race at 11:30 a.m.

The races will take place at Pymatuning State Park, Route 322, 2 miles west of Jamestown. A PennDOT-related detour in Greenville is possible, Frew cautioned spectators.

BOYS SOCCER

ä Grove City 5, Hickory 0 —
On Senior Night at Grove City Wednesday, the Eagles (9-9, 3-7) blanked the Hornets. Assisted by Cole Latimer, senior Will Potter and Peter Conley scored 77 seconds apart in the 1st half to put Grove City up 2-0.

Potter scored again 95 seconds into the 2nd half assisted by Alex Boarts. Boarts and Potter assisted senior striker Michael Augspurger to put the Eagles up 4-0. Boarts and Potter combined again to assist senior Dylan Motta.

Grove City had 42 offensive attacks, 28 shots and 16 shots on goal. Jed Grimm and Zach D’Antoni combined to make 1 save in goal; the Hornets had 10 offensive attacks, 3 shots and one shot on goal. Donté Green and James Dorko made 11 saves.

ä Wilmington 2, Slippery Rock 1 — At New Wilmington Wednesday, Jon Clark and Mark Delio scored for the hosts as the Hounds edged the Rockets.

Josh Jones had the lone goal for Slippery Rock. Zach Latorre made 8 saves in goal for SR while Ian Behm registered 4 for Wilmington.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

ä Hickory 3, Sharon 0 —
At “The Hive” in Hermitage, Hope Wilterdink had 14 points (6 aces), 7 kills and 6 digs to lead the Hornettes (5-5) to a 25-12, 25-9, 25-12 sweep.

Hickory: Nicole Lacava 8 points, 7 kills, 6 digs; Erin Hoffacker 5 digs; Danielle Collier 6 points, 8 kills, 16 digs; Victoria Tomko 10 points, 8 digs; Madison Collier 12 points, 9 digs, 16 assists; Katie Gustas 5 kills; Ashley Rose 5 digs. Sharon: No stats reported.

JV: Hickory, 25-17, 25-15.

ä Sharpsville 3, West Middlesex 0 — At West Middlesex, the Blue Darlings improved to 11-0 in Region 1 and 11-2 overall with the 25-8, 25-21, 25-19 sweep.

“We had a couple starters out, so the girls really picked it up and it was a nice region win,” said Sharpsville coach Scott Scurpa. “I was a little concerned because we played hard Wednesday and got beat by a bigger team (McDowell), but they bounced back and did a nice job.”

Sharpsville: Paige Scurpa 12 kills; Megan Davis 5 kills, 7 digs; Alex Ferrera 9 digs; Maddie Przicina 5 digs, 10 assists; Kristen Scurpa 7 assists. WM: No stats reported.

ä Kennedy Catholic 3, Lakeview 0 — At Stone-boro, Sarah Summers set the single-season record for digs (112), breaking the 2010 record of 101 by Jackie Laeng, as KC (10-2) notched a 25-14, 25-15, 25-23 sweep over the Lady Sailors (8-4).

KC: Brie Dickson 6 points, 12 digs, 11 kills; Sarah Summers 14 points, 12 digs; Yasir Muhammad 18 assists; Courtney Sargent 5 digs, 5 kills; J’Shawna Thompkins 7 points, 6 digs, 8 kills; Tatum Kress 5 points. Lakeview: Tia Ray 6 kills, 8 digs; Selena Stutzman 14 digs; Taylor Reed 16 assists, 5 digs.

  • Hickory boys track Hickory boys edge WM for D-10 Class AA Track team title

    HARBORCREEK — Hickory High co-head coach Mark Slezak referenced the term “exponential” in explaining the four-fold heart-felt feeling of having a relay team qualify for the PIAA Championships.
    That sentiment seemed to summarize Mercer County’s performance during Saturday’s annual District 10 Class AA Track & Field Championships.

  • 5 area teams qualify for D-10 baseball playoffs

    Five area baseball teams have qualified for the District 10 playoffs — Grove City, Kennedy Catholic, Sharpsville, West Middlesex and Wilmington.
    In the Class A semifinals, Kennedy Catholic faces Cochranton at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Northwestern High School. Rocky Grove faces Eisenhower in the other semifinal game.

  • Clay Allen Hickory, WM boys to collide at D-10 AA Track & Field Championships

    For the 2nd time this week, a District 10 track & field team title could be decided by a pair of Mercer County contingents.
    Just as Hickory and Grove City girls contested the Class AAA crown Wednesday night, so, too, are the Hickory and West Middlesex boys anticipating vying for Saturday’s AA title.

    ä Reynolds 4, Grove City 1 — At Transfer, Neal Engstrom fired a complete-game 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks in lifting the Raiders (9-8) past the Eagles (14-6).
    Ryan Grace was tagged with the loss for Grove City. He struck out 6 batters, issued no walks and gave up 7 hits in going the distance.

    HARBORCREEK— Some athletes seeded 1st in four events would feel pressure. For Grove City High senior Daniel Jaskowak, it’s an opportunity for name recognition.
    “I kind’ve like it. It’s cool, because people know who you are,” related Jaskowak, who won 3 events during Wednesday’s District 10 Class AAA Track & Field Championships.

    If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Cliché though that is, it will be borne out today at the annual District 10 Class AAA Track & Field Championships.
    Hickory High girls — the defending PIAA Class AA titlists — will test the best from the biggest. And the Lady Hornets hope to give as good as they get from the 6-county competition.

  • Ryan Grace Roundup: Grace, GC beat Sharon, 4-0, in 5 innings

    With an impending storm blowing in above Johnny Pepe Field time was limited, so Ryan Grace greedily gobbled up putouts.
    Grove City High’s Grace gave up only 3 base hits, and the visiting Eagles eased to an abbreviated 4-0, 5-inning win over Sharon Friday afternoon.

  • Welcome home! HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: County track meet set Saturday at Hickory

    The annual Mercer County Track & Field Invitational will be held at Hickory High’s Hornet Stadium Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
    Competing are all Mercer County teams, Class AAA and AA, as well as Slippery Rock. The meet serves as a warm-up to the District 10 championships set next week at Harbor Creek High.

  • Hailey Gearhart Roundup: Sharon baseball squad edges Sharpsville, 5-4

    It was a tense Tuesday in Tiger-town.
    Twenty-four hours removed from a 1-run Region 2-AA loss at New Wilmington, Sharon High’s baseball team could not afford another setback, otherwise its postseason aspirations were alleviated.
    Conversely, region pacesetting Sharpsville could have secured the crown with a win, and the Blue Devils dashed to an early 3-0 lead.
