HIGH SCHOOL FALL SPORTS: Blue Devil run set Saturday

BROOKFIELD — The 11th annual Sharpsville Blue Devil Cross Country Invitational will commence 10 a.m. Saturday in Buhl Farm Park.

Meet director Dr Peter Vilasi said approximately 1,500 runners representing 47 schools competed in 2011.

Vilasi, via an e-mail, characterized the course as “ ... a fast and challenging race course ... that showcases the competitiveness of cross country runners in District 10 and surrounding areas.”

ä Conneaut Area 185 Mercer 194 — At Oakland Beach near Conneaut Lake, host Conneaut copped the win, led by medalist Kyler Betts. Mercer is now 2-8.

Region 3 Mega-Match

ä Meadville 306, Slippery Rock 316, Grove City 327, Warren 334, Oil City 352 — Slippery Rock’s Brett Rinker recorded a sizzling 66 on his home course, but MASH prevailed, led by Zack Ford  (72) and Charlie Holt (74).

Meadville (22) leads the season standings, followed by Grove City (19), Slippery Rock (17), Warren (12) and Oil City (5).

Brookfield Invitational

At Yankee Run, John F. Kennedy copped the 1st 4 placewinners to easily outdistance the 9-team field.

Ryan Fowler (71), Billy Phillips (76), James LaPolla (77) and Stephen Macali (79) enabled the Eagles (303) to soar. Also, Daniel Lopola (86) ended 11th.

Ursuline (354), Brookfield (357), Harding (364), Pymatuning Valley (364), Maplewood (378), Vienna-Mathews and Lordstown (391) and Conneaut (414) rounded out the field.

Ursuline’s Jimmy Naples (80) finished 5th, just ahead of Brookfield’s Mike Pasquerilla (83). Harding’s Elijah Suttic and Py Valley’s Warren Kozlowski (84), and Ursuline’s Sam DelColle and Lordstown’s Nick Johnson (85) rounded out the top 10.

Also for Brookfield, Lonnie Schell (87) and Adam Brooks (83) placed 11th and 20th, respectively.

Mathews’ Aaron Suchanek and Maplewood’s Nate Spittler (89s) and Conneaut’s Mike Nelson (91), 16th, 17th and 18th, respectively.

ä Slippery Rock 2, Hickory 0 — Cole McCandless collected both Slippery Rock scores, 1 in each half, and the first was assited by Aaron Gersteen.

Zach Latorre made 3 saves for Slippery Rock; Donté Green 10 for Hickory

ä Mercer 1, Kennedy Catholic 0 — A Lamor Road Field, Nathan Breese’s PK was the lone goal.

Allan Rabold made 2 saves for Mercer (1-0, 5-1), while Golden Eagles’ goalkeeper Gavin Cianci saved 14 shots.

Kennedy fell to 4-1.

GIRLS SOCCER

ä Cambridge Springs 2, Sharon 0 —  At Tiger Stadium, the visiting Spa (4-1) shut out Sharon. Alexis Jefferson made 12 saves in goal for Sharon (1-3).

GIRLS TENNIS

ä Sharon 4. Brookfield (B) — At Buhl Farm Park, the host Lady Tigers (5-5) triumphed, led by Rebecca Rueberger and Marissa Monnin at 1st and 3rd singles, and the tandem of Aubrianna DelliBovi-Alex Hughey. Brookfield is 4-8.

ä Mercer 3, Jamestown 0 — At Jamestown, the visiting Lady M’s mustered a 25-13, 25-17, 25-10 sweep.
