Roundup: WM rolls past Farrell; KC stuns Mercer

Herald staff

---- — Six of the eight remaining games on the schedule Friday night were key District 10 region games.

In Region 1-A, West Middlesex beat Farrell, 38-6; Sharpsville defeated Conneaut, 30-27 and Kennedy Catholic stunned the Mustangs in Mercer, 18-13.

In Region 3, Grove City posted a 20-6 win over Reynolds; Sharon suffered a tough loss to Titusville, 35-33, and Greenville routed Saegertown, 42-6.

In non-region action, the Franklin Knights ended a 14-game losing streak with a 28-24 win over Lakeview and Brookfield topped Struthers, 26-13, in a battle of previously-unbeaten programs.

The following were reported to The Herald:

ä Kennedy Catholic 18, Mercer 13 — At Mercer, the visiting Golden Eagles unleased a powerful aerial attack to pull off the key Region 1-A victory.

The combination of junior quarterback Brennan Wassil and senior running back Jeff Thompkins accounted for two touchdowns of 40 and 64 yards. In all Thompkins had 5 catches for an amazing 172 yards.

The other KC touchdown also came through the air as Wassil connected with Jacob Feeney on a 15-yard scoring pass.

For Mercer, quarterback Logan Clarke scored on a 5-yard run and also fired a 5-yard pass to Vik Rymniak.

For the Golden Eagles of coach Archie Donofrio, it was a welcome victory after a tough 6-0 loss at Farrell last weekend when the Golden Eagles saw several scoring attempts stymied deep in Farrell territory.

Kennedy is 1-1 in the region and 1-2 overall. Mercer falls to 0-2, 1-2.

ä Grove City 20, Reynolds 6 — At Forker Field in Grove City, coach Jeff Bell’s Eagles (2-0, 3-0) scored a pair of touchdowns in the 1st quarter and went on to win the Region 3 clash against the Raiders (1-1, 2-1).

GC took a 7-0 lead in the 1st frame on a 7-yard touchdown run by Harold Price and Dylan Motta.

The Eagles went up 13-0 later in the quarter on a 35-yard TD pass from Jared Graham to Foster Reznor. The extra-point kick failed.

Reynolds cut the lead to 13-6 in the 2nd quarter on a 2-yard TD run by Michael Millero. The PAT failed.

GC extended its lead to 20-6 in the 3rd quarter on an 11-yard run by Graham and Motta’s extra-point kick.

Graham was 5-of-6 for 115 yards for GC and Price led the team in rushing with 71 yards on 11 carries.

ä West Middlesex 38, Farrell 6 — The host Big Reds had lost 5 straight games to the Steelers, but early on Friday the Reds showed that streak was coming to an end. West Middlesex built an early 14-0 margin, moved to 25-6 at intermission and never looked back.

West Middlesex was sparked by speedster Luke Patten who tallied 4 touchdowns on a 52-yard pass reception from Try Staunch, runs of 13 and 27 yards and a 30-yard pick-six. Patten finished the day with 141 yards on 16 carries.

The other TD for the Big Reds came on a 19-yard pass from Staunch to Sage Pope. The Reds amased 383 yards of offense in dominating fashion.

Not to be outdone, the Big Reds defense forced a pair of safeties.

Farrell’s lone score came in the second quarter on a 58-yard spring by Dewayne Burns.

The victory lifted coach Jason McElhaney’s Reds to 1-0 in Region 1-A and 2-1 overall, while Farrell fell to 1-1 and 2-1.

ä Sharpsville 30, Conneaut 27 — At McCracken Field in Sharpsville, the Blue Devils (2-0, 3-0) held a 22-0 lead after the 1st quarter and held on for the Region 1-A win in a thriller against Conneaut (0-2, 1-2).

Sharpsville went up 6-0 in the 1st on a 4-yard run by Derrick Odem. The extra-point kick failed. Ross Llewellyn then scored on a 20-yard run and quarterback Bryan Stafford added a 59-yard run. Tyler Luchey and Stafford tacked on 2-point conversions after those scores for the 22-0 lead.

Conneaut cut the lead to 22-13 by halftime with a pair of 2nd-quarter TDs by QB Jon Onderko (18-yard run) and Elijah Anderton (2 run).

In the 3rd, Conneaut trimmed the lead to 22-20 on a 4-yard pass from Onderko to Tyler Bartlett and a PAT.

Coach Paul Piccirilli’s Blue Devils extended the lead to 30-20 in the 4th quarter on a 9-yard run by Llewellyn, who then scored on a 2-point conversion run.

Conneaut closed out the scoring on a 59-yard run by Bartlett and an extra-point kick.

Odem rushed for 113 yards on 22 carries while Stafford was 4-of-5 for 54 yards and 1 pick. Anderton had 136 yards rushing on 26 totes for Conneaut.

ä Titusville 35, Sharon 33 — At Sharon, the visiting Rockets shocked the home squad with a late-game rally in the Region 3-AA clash.

Sharon built a 27-16 halftime lead and appeared en route to a second straight league victory. However things didn’t go well from there.

Still, Sharon had a chance late in the game. The Tigers pulled off a flea-flicker play with Rodgers pitching back to Carnell Hawkins who then fired a strike to Kwentel Teague for a play good for a 56-yard score that cut the Rockets margin to 35-33. However, a game-tying pass for points after failed and Sharon fell to 1-1 in the region and 1-2 overall.

Tigers quarterback Jesse Rodgers scored three touchdowns in the contest on runs of 25, 58 and 21 yards. He also hooked up with Hawkins on a 67-yard pass play.

For Titusville (1-1, 2-1), Xavier DeRose tallied 3 TDs on runs of 3, 6 and 22 yards. Jayce Corklin scored on a 27 yard run and Stearns kicked a 20-yard field goal. Titusville also recorded a pair of safeties which contributed heavily to the victory.

For Sharon defensively, Troy Hejazi had 2 fumble recoveries and an interception, while Smith-Austin also had an interception.

ä Brookfield 26, Struthers 13 — At Wildcat Stadium in Struthers, Ryan Mosora rushed for 178 yards on 25 carries and 2 touchdowns as the Warriors (4-0) topped the Wildcats (3-1) in a battle of previously-unbeaten teams.

Struthers took a 6-0 lead in the 2nd quarter on a 22-yard TD pass from Gary Muntean to Tommy Kimbrough. The extra-point attempt failed.

Brookfield cut the lead to 7-6 prior to the break on an 11-yard scoring strike from Jeremy Quinlan to Jimmy Quinlan. Jeremy booted the PAT for the slim lead.

Brookfield took control in the 3rd quarter with a pair of scores by Mosora. The senior running back scored on runs of 5 and 24 yards. The PAT attempts failed on both TDs.

Coach Randy Clark’s Warriors then went up 26-6 in the 4th frame on a 30-yard interception return by Jeremy Quinlan. He added the PAT after his pick-6.

Struthers’ Kimbrough returned a kickoff 85 yards to close out the scoring for both teams.

Quinlan had 109 rushing yards on 19 carries and was 8-of-13 for 55 yards passing.

The Brookfield defense shut down Struthers standout senior RB David Stewart. He only had 41 yards on 15 totes.

ä Greenville 42, Saegertown 6 — At Saegertown, the Trojans of coach Brian Herrick looked impressive in the first victory of the season.

The win lifted Greenville to 1-1 in Region 3-AA and 1-2 overall. Saegertown is 0-2, 0-3.

Tyler Fattman and and Luke Houpt each scored a pair of touchdowns for Greenville. Fattman tallied on runs of 60 and 5 yards while Houpt hit paydirt form 3 and 44 yards. Jacob Riffe scored on a 13-yard sprint and Cody Nellis on a 21-yard run for Greenville.

Lance Neuscheler tallied on a 20-yard run for Saegertown’s lone points.

ä Franklin 28, Lakeview 24 — At Franklin, the Knights (1-2) notched the program’s first win in 2 seasons.

Former Farrell High standout Forrest Wested was instrumental, rushing and passing for touchdowns and also hauling in another.

Wested’s 1-yard plunge with 15 ticks to play proved decisive.

Wested forged Franklin’s first win after 14 consecutive setbacks with a 10-carry, 95-yard rushing effort, 6-for-13, 45-yard passing performance, and a half-dozen receptions for another 73 yards.

Lakeview speedster Blake Reddick roared to a game-high 17-carry, 178-yard rushing outing that included 64-, 35- and 50-yard scoring sprints. However, reportedly Reddick sustained an injury, the extent of which was not known as of press time.

Also fo Lakeview (2-1), Zach VanDusen rushed for 115 yards on 19 carries, including a 6-yard 4th-quarter TD that staked the Sailors to a short-lived 24-14 lead.
