JACK KERINS was a man ahead of his time. When he took a risk and purchased Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in the 1940s, golf was really not a widely played hobby in this area.
But he knew that to build the sport locally, he had to be a promoter. He had to involve youngsters as well as women in the game.
So in 1949, upon the urging of Herald Sports Editor Johnny Pepe, Jack started what is today The Herald-Tam O’Shanter Junior Golf Championships.
And 61 years later, it’s still going strong thanks to Jack’s son, Tamie Director of Golf John Kerins. It is free to any boy and girl in the Shenango Valley who won’t reach the age of 18 by Sept. 1.
This year’s event will be held Wednesday and Thursday at Tamie. Deadline to enter is 6 p.m. Monday, so young golfers need to act fast and bring a parent to the course to register.
