HIGH SCHOOL FALL SPORTS: Brookfield tops Newton Falls

MERCER COUNTY AREA — FOOTBALL

ä Brookfield 59, Newton Falls 12 — It took 2 days, but Brookfield  boosted its early-season record to 2-0.

At Addison Field on Friday night, a light tower transformer malfunctioned, causing officials to suspend play due to darkness. It probably seemed hardly worth the return trip for Newton Falls to complete the contest on Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Mosora scored on runs of 30 and 6 yards, returned an interception 30 yards, and also hauled in a 20-yard TD toss from Jeremy Quinlan. Also for the winning Warriors, Joey Clark collected 2- and 16-yard touchdown runs, Derek Sulick returned a kickoff 67 yards for a score, and Chris Johnson ran 2 yards.

Brookfield bruised Newton Falls (0-2) for 313 yards rushing and 420 total yards. Newton Falls has yielded 114 points in its first 2 games. Derek Walton went 1 yard in the 1st quarter to tally a Tigers’ TD, then Brandon Fuller flew 80 yards in the 2nd stanza.

ä Reynolds 44, Maplewood 0 — At Guys Mills Friday night, the visiting Raiders rolled to the rout, posting the program’s first season-opening win since 2005.

Reynolds rushed for 263 yards, and coach Jerry Pacifico’s defense permitted just 2 total yards, as Maplewood mustered a minus-31 yards rushing.

Kellen Gursky garnered an 8-carry, 87-yard performance that included scoring sprints of 28 and 19 yards, while Austin Matthews mustered an identical 8-carry, 87-yard outing that included a 48-yard touchdown run. Mike Millero maneuvered for another 54 yards and tallied twice from 15 and 9 yards out.

Also, Brenton Tymchyshyn returned a 4th-period punt 55 yards for Reynolds’ final score.
