Roundup: Big Reds roll over Beaver Area; Farrell, Hickory, Sharon notch 5-AAA wins

---- — The Bible tells us that we are measured by how we measure others. Which is why West Middlesex High boys basketball team is measuring itself against its caliber of competition.

Beaver was the barometer Friday night, and the Big Reds raced to their most impressive win thus far this season, 97-74, over the WPIAL Class AAA visitors.

Jeremy Jancso jump-started West Middlesex in the 1st frame with 10 of his game- and career-high 31 points. Sinking 6 straight freebies at the outset, Jansco shot a sizzling 17 for 20 from the free-throw line, while West Middlesex went 32 for 38 collectively (84.2 percent).

The Runnin’ Reds have raced to an average of 92.2 points per game during their last 7 outings, including 107 in a rout of Rocky Grove.

“It’s, for sure, a commitment. We play hard, and it comes out in defense and hustling and rebounding, and that’s what we need to do to take care of good teams,” related state-caliber high-jumper Jancso.

Joining Jansco in leading West Middlesex’s win were Jerrod Palmer, who pumped in 25 points on 9-for-12 marksmanship that included a handful of treys; Matt Dogan, who donated a 23-point, 9-rebound, 6-assist line, and Trey Staunch, who scored a dozen without missing a shot and snared 7 caroms.

Dogan has deposited 1,964 career points, according to Herald archives, as he pursues Kyle Randalll’s Mercer County mark (2,022).

State-ranked Class AA West Middlesex (15-3) went 30 for 47 from the field (63.8 percent), led by Palmer, Jancso (7 for 11) and Staunch (6 for 6).

“We talked about coming out and jumping on them early, and Jerrod Palmer and Jeremy Jansco got us going. I thought it was a great team effort (Friday) night, and we’re heading in the right direction at the right time,” summarized Middlesex mentor Chad Mild.

“This is a good test and we wanted to see where we’re at right now,” Mild continued, “We played well (Friday) night, but we have to continue to play well because the big game is Tuesday against Lakeview (District 10 Region 2-AA).”

West Middlesex’s wire-to-wire win (27-15, 50-36, 70-57 at the conclusion of each quarter) baffled 3rd-year Beaver bench boss Andrew Podbielski. Though Middlesex made 22 miscues, the Big Reds responded every time the Bobcats brokered a bounce-back.

“Defensively this wasn’t a real pretty game ... we didn’t have a good night defensively. We couldn’t stop Dogan and number five (Palmer) shot the lights out, he killed us. It’s a credit to them, they made the shots.

“Last year we were in the WPIAL Final Four in triple-A and Sweet Sixteen in the state tournament, so we’ve had success, and this team could be as good as that one, if not better. We’ve got a lot of potential,” Podbielski added.

Bolstering Beaver (15-3) were 6-foot-5 post Aaron Barlow, who bucketed a 26-point, 13-rebound double-double, 6-2 swingman Corey Nesmith, who notched 15 points and a half-dozen caroms, and guards Austin Logan and Anthony DiNuzzo, who evenly divided 2 dozen points. DiNuzzo dished out 3 assists and Logan lent 5. But Beaver shot only 24 for 59 (40.6) and turned over the ball 20 times.

“I’m proud of our guys offensively. We battled, but some things just didn’t go our way,” Podbielski said. “I think our guys played well. We scored the ball well; just didn’t get enough stops.”

But it was all West Middlesex, which won its 11th consecutive contest.

“It was a good win for them, and they really came out ready to play,” Podbielski praised regarding the Reds. “They put on an offensive clinic for sure, and they made some tough shots — a lot were contested. They rebounded, they hustled and they made a lot of plays.

“ ... They’re certainly talented, they’re very big, they’re very strong and they’re very tough,” Podbielski praised. “We’re gonna keep moving forward. I knew coming in what we were gonna get up here (Friday) night ... I knew we were gonna get a tough game. I knew it was gonna be physical and a hostile environment.

“We definitely wanted to play a game like this, with that kind of intensity and atmosphere,” Podbielski added.

“I think we’re coming together as a group,” Mild mused. “We opened up with Beaver Falls, then we had a tough Perry (Traditional Academy) game, then we went to Poland. We had some tough games early and people were questioning us, ‘How well do they attack a zone? ‘Do we do this well, do we do that well?’

“Well, I think we’re starting to answer some questions, and I think we’re starting to believe in ourselves right now,” Mild added.

Note: Mild addressed the situation concerning his senior starting guard Roman Klaric, who recently was charged by Sharpsville police with disorderly conduct and underage drinking. Klaric sat out a game earlier this week at Mercer, but started against Beaver and dished out a team-high half-dozen assists: “We don’t have a position on it right now because there’s no (school district) policy in place,” Mild said. “It was addressed with us in private, and I think he knows he made a mistake. But there’s also a due-process to the issue; you’re innocent until you’re proven guilty. ... Our kids know what we’re about and our community knows what we’re about and our administrators know what we’re about. Sometimes kids get caught in situations that they shouldn’t, and everybody’s learned from the situation.” — By Ed Farrell, Herald assistant sports editor.
