The 14th annual Hickory Hornet Harrier Cross Country Invitational will highlight the first full weekend of the 2012-13 scholastic school year.
Meet director Tony Mastrian said the annual event will take place on the Delahunty School campus in Hermitage, with girls’ and boys’ varsity races beginning at 9 and 9:45 a.m., respectively.
This year’s field will include Cochranton, Commo-dore Perry, Conneaut Lake, Greenville, Hickory, Jamestonw, Kennedy Catholic, Lakeview, Laurel, Neshannock, Reynolds, Rocky Grove, Sharon, Sharpsville, Shenango, West Middlesex and Wilmington.
Following the varsity races, the remainder of the order of events includes a combined girls/boys junior varsity race, 10:30 a.m., followed by boys’ and girls’ junior high races at 11:15 and 11:45 a.m., respectively. Mastrian noted the latter races are rolling start times, meaning some could begin earlier if earlier races are proceeding ahead of schedule.
BOYS GOLF
ä Newton Falls 154, Brookfield 177 — At Riverview Golf Course on Tuesday, Jacob Harrah fired a 36 to pace the winners. Also for the Falls were: Logan Beechy (37), Sean Croell (37) and John Seals (44).
Brookfield (6-4) was led by Lonnie Schell’s 40, while other Warriors’ scores were James Infante (45), Adam Brooks (45) and Michale Pasquerilla (47).
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
ä Newton Falls 3, Brookfield 1 — Newton Falls defeated Brookfield (0-3), 30-28, 21-25, 25-20 and 25-18, on Tuesday.
Brookfield: Dalaney Saxton 17 kills, 10 points; Ali Harpster 12 kills, 17 digs, 9 points; Maddie Bonekovic 29 digs, 7 points; Tori Thompson 53 assists, 5 points; Sarah Egercic 12 points, 7 kills. Newton Falls (1-1): Brooke Barreca 14 kills; Hannah Zelle 11 kills, 12 points; Tori Workman 22 digs, Katie Wainwright 22 points, 12 assists; Haley Spletzer 20 assists.
GIRLS TENNIS
ä Lordstown 4, Brookfield 1 — At Harding Park in Hubbard on Wednesday, Lordstown improved to 6-0 on the season and the Lady Warriors dropped to 2-4.
Ashley Kirila posted a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Amanda Dillard at first singles in the only victory for coach Kevin Boyd’s Brookfield girls tennis squad.
