Roundup: GC, Hickory, Sharon, Wilmington tennis teams win

ä Grove City 3, Kennedy Catholic 2 —
At Grove City on Tuesday, the Lady Eagles improved to a perfect 4-0 with the win over KC (2-2).

GC swept the singles matches while the Lady Golden Eagles won both doubles matches.

Singles: Abby Casalnova (GC) def. Kelsey George, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4; Meredith Trent (GC) def. Monica Bober, 6-7, 6-0, 6-3; Reba Duran (GC) def. Rebecca Kish, 6-3, 6-4. Doubles: Jensen Kirila-Stephanie Moore (KC) def. Alexis Delligatti-Stephanie Krofcheck, 6-4, 6-4; Alex Hudson-Abby Lenhart (KC) def. Maddie Jazwinski-Katie Kosick, 6-4, 6-2.

ä Sharon 4, Oil City 1 — At Buhl Park, the Lady Tigers improved to 2-2 with the win over the Lady Oilers (1-3).

Singles: Mora McLaughlin (OC) won by forfeit; Rebecca Rueberger (S) def. Micheala Lockwood, 6-0, 6-0; Kaitlyn Jones (S) def. Allie Domer, 6-3, 6-1. Doubles: Abrianna Dellibovi-Marissa Monin (S) def. ä Hickory 5, Franklin 0 — At Franklin, the Hornettes upped their 2012 ledger to 4-0 with the sweep of the Lady Knights.

Singles: Marissa Works (H) def. Mimi Terman, 6-0, 6-0; Allie Newmeyer (H) def. Lexi Weaver, 6-1, 6-0; Hickory wins No. 3 by default. Doubles: Rachel Mettee-Sharon Mettee (H) def. Hanna Stewart-Bree Rodgers, 6-1, 7-6; Lauren McGonigle-Lauren Kizak (H) def. Beth Pfohl-Caitlin Phipps, 6-0, 6-0.

ä Wilmington 5, Greenville 0 — At Westminster College, coach Jim Arrow’s Lady Hounds (2-2) swept the Lady Trojans.

Singles: Katie Chase (W) def. Jessica Burnett, 7-5, 6-1; Lauren Barber (W) def. Casslyn Holder, 6-2, 6-0; Alanna Elliott (W) def. Amanda Dawes, 6-2, 6-2. ä Struthers 4, Brookfield 1 — At Harding Park in Hubbard, Struthers improved to 7-1 while the Lady Warriors dropped to 2-3.

Ashley Kirila notched the lone victory for Brookfield at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alex Wildes.

Singles: Kirila (B) def. Wildes, 6-2, 6-4; Kara Thompson (S) def. Autumn Kirila, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5; Ashley Kane (S) wins by default. Doubles: Allie Roddy-Sarah George (S) def. Leah Bayer-Ana Zarlinski, 6-0, 6-0; Struthers wins No. 1 doubles by default.

GIRLS GOLF

Region 1 Mega-Match


Hickory rolled to victory on Tuesday in the Region 1 Mega-Match at Hickory VFW Golf Course with a team score of 179. Reynolds had a 227.

Rosy Hearns fired a 37 to lead Hickory while Brianna Colbert fired a 44, Alena Lancia shot a 46 and Abby Hearns carded a 52.

Izzy Schell led the way for Reynolds with a 51. Also for the Lady Raiders, Jamie Vamosi had a 52, Taylor Yahner posted a 59 and Brittany Fitzgerald carded a 65.

Grove City’s Fontaine McFeaters shot a 49 and Meg Birmingham had a 56. Both compete as independents, along with Commodore Perry’s Haley Bates (59).

BOYS GOLF

ä Kennedy Catholic 173, Lakeview 184 — At Tam O’Shanter, Jacob Wilson fired a 41 and John McGonigle had a 42 in leading the Golden Eagles past the Sailors.

Sam Magargee shot a 42 for Lakeview and Casey Greggs carded a 43.

KC: Wilson 41, McGonigle 42, Paul Spondike, Ted Haaz 45s. Lakeview: Magargee 42, Greggs 43, Keith Kepner 49, Jared Coulter 50.

ä Ursuline 187, Brookfield 190 — On Monday in the rain at Stambaugh Golf Course, the host Irish were led by co-medalists Del Colle and G. Naples, both of whom shot 42, 1 stroke better than Brookfield’s Lonnie Schell. The Warriors fell to 6-3.

Ursuline: Colle 42, G. Naples 42, Sabella 51, J. Naples 52. Brookfield: Schell 43, Adam Brooks 48, Michael Pasquerilla 49, Derrick Dickson 50.

  • Alaura Straka Playoffs: GC, Hounds win; Reynolds, Sharpsville softball advance

    The District 10 playoffs kicked off on Tuesday for 4 area baseball teams and 5 softball squads.
    In Class A softball, Reynolds edged West Middlesex, 5-4, in an 8-inning thriller while Sharpsville ousted Rocky Grove, 5-0. In Class AA, Northwestern beat Wilmington, 9-5, and Harbor Creek defeated Mercer, 4-3.

  • Hickory boys track Hickory boys edge WM for D-10 Class AA Track team title

    HARBORCREEK — Hickory High co-head coach Mark Slezak referenced the term “exponential” in explaining the four-fold heart-felt feeling of having a relay team qualify for the PIAA Championships.
    That sentiment seemed to summarize Mercer County’s performance during Saturday’s annual District 10 Class AA Track & Field Championships.

  • 5 area teams qualify for D-10 baseball playoffs

    Five area baseball teams have qualified for the District 10 playoffs — Grove City, Kennedy Catholic, Sharpsville, West Middlesex and Wilmington.
    In the Class A semifinals, Kennedy Catholic faces Cochranton at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Northwestern High School. Rocky Grove faces Eisenhower in the other semifinal game.

  • Clay Allen Hickory, WM boys to collide at D-10 AA Track & Field Championships

    For the 2nd time this week, a District 10 track & field team title could be decided by a pair of Mercer County contingents.
    Just as Hickory and Grove City girls contested the Class AAA crown Wednesday night, so, too, are the Hickory and West Middlesex boys anticipating vying for Saturday’s AA title.

  • Neal Engstrom Roundup: Reynolds baseball tops GC; Sharpsville, Wilmington softball teams win

    ä Reynolds 4, Grove City 1 — At Transfer, Neal Engstrom fired a complete-game 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks in lifting the Raiders (9-8) past the Eagles (14-6).
    Ryan Grace was tagged with the loss for Grove City. He struck out 6 batters, issued no walks and gave up 7 hits in going the distance.

  • Grove City girls GC girls 3-peat at District 10 Class AAA Track & Field Championships

    HARBORCREEK— Some athletes seeded 1st in four events would feel pressure. For Grove City High senior Daniel Jaskowak, it’s an opportunity for name recognition.
    “I kind’ve like it. It’s cool, because people know who you are,” related Jaskowak, who won 3 events during Wednesday’s District 10 Class AAA Track & Field Championships.

    If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Cliché though that is, it will be borne out today at the annual District 10 Class AAA Track & Field Championships.
    Hickory High girls — the defending PIAA Class AA titlists — will test the best from the biggest. And the Lady Hornets hope to give as good as they get from the 6-county competition.

  • Ryan Grace Roundup: Grace, GC beat Sharon, 4-0, in 5 innings

    With an impending storm blowing in above Johnny Pepe Field time was limited, so Ryan Grace greedily gobbled up putouts.
    Grove City High’s Grace gave up only 3 base hits, and the visiting Eagles eased to an abbreviated 4-0, 5-inning win over Sharon Friday afternoon.

  • Welcome home! HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: County track meet set Saturday at Hickory

    The annual Mercer County Track & Field Invitational will be held at Hickory High’s Hornet Stadium Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
    Competing are all Mercer County teams, Class AAA and AA, as well as Slippery Rock. The meet serves as a warm-up to the District 10 championships set next week at Harbor Creek High.
