WM boys team captures White Division team title at Big Red Invite

Herald Staff reports

Fairview High’s Sam Havko established a course record Saturday during the 18th annual Big Red Cross Country Invitational in West Middlesex. In winning the Red Division, Havko highlighted the 1,285-competitor field by covering the course in a time of 15:57.6.

Meanwhile, West Middlesex’s Adam Shawder secured his second straight successful weekend with a win in an invitational as he won the White Division in a school-record clocking of 16:33.4. The Shrawder-led Big Reds raced to the White Division team title with a 53-point performance to easily outdistance runner-up Union City (80).

Union City’s Hannah Day (19:57.3) and North East’s Katie Perkins (19:23.8) were the respective girls’ White and Red Division medalists.

The other varsity boys’ team titlist was Quaker Valley, which edged North East 41-44 for the Red Division crown. Among the girls, Day led a quartet of Lady Bears to the tape as Union City outdistanced West Middlesex 27-54 for the White Division championship, while Fort LeBoeuf led the girls’ Red Division field by accumulating 63 points.

Although Union City swept the top four places in a 39-second pack, West Middlesex mustered 5 of the top 13 placewinners, including Brittany Ruffo (8th), and Lauren Shingledecker, Karen Willey, Hannah Gaines and Morgan Swartz (10-11-12-13).

Other local highlights included: Hickory’s Morgan Richards (19:31.9), runner-up in the Red Division race; West Middlesex’s Mike Ryan (16:49.6), 3rd in the White Division, and Grove City’s Jake Kildoo (16:23.9), who finished 5th in the Red Division.

“It was an excellent day weather-wise — October weather in September — and fantastic races and efforts from all the athletes of western Pennsylvania in each race. ... This was the most highly-competitive meet we’ve ever had,” assessed West Middlesex mentor and meet director Bob Morris. “A big thanks to the community, (school) district and parents for making this meet a huge success. ... It takes a whole ‘X-C’ family (teachers, parents, administration, community) to make an event like this a success. Thanks!”
