  • SPORTVIEW: Forget being the next Lebron; hit the books

THERE’S A LOT of television hype about LeBron James, Wimbledon and the World Cup. However — dare I say — there are a lot of things more important than sports.
One of the most important for young athletes is to be well-balanced and concentrate on academics. That’s why the annual Mercer Count Hall of Fame’s “Tom Burns Academic All-Star Awards” are so important.

“We’re finding some ways to win ballgames,” summarized Scrappers’ skipper Travis Fryman following his club’s 2-1 Pinckney Division victory over the Jamestown Jammers Friday night before 3,330 Eastwood Field fans.

  • Outdoors: Sometimes a solitary trip to camp is best

I arrived on a Friday evening at F-Troop, just me and the two camp kitties Austin and Pooh-Cat. I settled the two pets in at their 20-hour-per-day sleeping venues and their food-and-water stations and walked out back to build a campfire. A couple of hot dogs and some good quiet time later, I doused the flames and headed to the front deck to settle in on the wicker rocker and listen to the great, grave movement of waters downstream in the majestic Allegheny River.

  • Scrappers rout Batavia to improve to 3-5

NILES — While his club was preparing to board a bus to return to the road, Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ skipper Travis Fryman hardly had time to savor his squad snapping a 4-game homestand skid.
“This is a difficult game to play,” Fryman, the former 13-year Major League Baseball veteran ruefully acknowledged following his Scrappers’ 12-4 New York-Penn League win over Batavia’s Muckdogs.

  • Lynn Saternow FAIRWAY SHOTS: Tiger will be back; Lombardi nails double eagle; ace contest, Shamrock scramble set

I AM ALWAYS amazed at how brutal the media can be. Wait a minute, no I’m not.
Some of the TV, radio and newspaper golf “experts” have pummeled Tiger Woods for his golf play, including his failure to win the U.S. Open on Sunday. Some are telling us that he stinks and will never regain his championship form.

    They're wrong!
