Wilmington softball team bows in Western Regional final
BROCKWAY — Had Julius Caesar coached the Wilmington High softball team intsead of Paul Smargiasso, perhaps he may have penned his wartime motto a bit differently.
“We came, we saw, we faltered,” Caesar may have said after Monday’s 10-0 loss to Philipsburg-Oceola (25-1) in the PIAA Class AA semifinal at Brockway High. If the Lady ’Hounds skipper’s comments after the game are any indication of such, he would agree, too.

Wilmington girls 1 step from state
Wilmington coach Paul Smargiasso said he has been working his team harder than any others that he took into the District 10 playoffs in recent years. Obviously, that extra hard practice is paying off.
Besides winning their first D-10 title, the Lady Hounds have had to go extra innings the last two games to advance into today’s PIAA Class AA semifinals against Philipsburg-Oceola at 4:30 p.m. at Brockway High field. -

Herald-Tamie Jr. deadline Monday; KPGA, Avalon youth events set; GC club to host Sr. Open qualifier
JACK KERINS was a man ahead of his time. When he took a risk and purchased Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in the 1940s, golf was really not a widely played hobby in this area.
But he knew that to build the sport locally, he had to be a promoter. He had to involve youngsters as well as women in the game.
So in 1949, upon the urging of Herald Sports Editor Johnny Pepe, Jack started what is today The Herald-Tam O’Shanter Junior Golf Championships.
And 61 years later, it’s still going strong thanks to Jack’s son, Tamie Director of Golf John Kerins. It is free to any boy and girl in the Shenango Valley who won’t reach the age of 18 by Sept. 1.
This year’s event will be held Wednesday and Thursday at Tamie. Deadline to enter is 6 p.m. Monday, so young golfers need to act fast and bring a parent to the course to register. -
Wilmington vaults Valley in PIAA play
WEXFORD — Coaches and players from the Wilmington and Valley High softball teams were all asking the same question Thursday:
What the heck happened?
A controversial umpire’s call brought home the winning run in Wilmington’s 5-4 victory over Valley in the PIAA Class AA interdistrict playoffs at North Allegheny High field and sent the Lady Hounds to the state semifinals.

Wilmington girls take on Valley today in PIAA softball playoffs
District 10 champion Wilmington High’s Lady Hounds are making their second run in PIAA interdistrict softball action and today they’ll face a familiar foe: Valley High’s Lady Vikings.
In 2007, the Lady Hounds of coach Paul Smargiasso dropped a 2-0 decision to Valley. And while Wilmington is out to avenge that loss, this Valley is a big hill to climb. Valley is a perfect 22-0 and wears the crown as WPIAL Class AA champion.
One of the biggest obstacles for the Lady Hounds (22-1) in the 1 p.m. game at Slippery Rock University is Valley pitcher Caitlin Nealer. -
