Roundup: WM sweeps Big Red Relays

---- — West Middlesex High girls’ and boys’ cross country teams swept their own Relays Saturday morning.

Schools were divided into 3-runner teams, with each competitor essentially running 1 mile.

The Ms. Reds required only 9 points to outdistance New Castle and Sharon. They were led by the 1st-place team of Kristen White, Jordan Aubel and Kelsey Murray, who clocked in at 19:27, and the runner-up squad of Chloé Tyillian, Anna Zrile and Alyson Pierce (20:14). Another Middlesex group finished 4th (Logan Nitsche, Kia Howe, and Madison Weimer) in 21:01.

The Big Reds tied with Maplewood with 27 points apiece; however, the stalemate was snapped by their 3rd-place team, according to meet director Bob Morris.

Maplewood (Parsons, Parsons, Wentz) won in a time of 16:06, while New Castle (Shepard, Blackwell, Mazzanti) ended as runners-up in 16:33, and Cochranton (Herzberer, Kline, Lindeman) copped 3rd in 16:42.

However the Big Reds’ trio of triplets took 4-5-6. They included Aaron Wilson, Brett Kirk and R.J. Gilliland (16:45); David Johnson, Levi Canon and Jerad Germani (16:46), and Issac Williams, Aaron Fitzgerald and Dylan Long (17:19).

Maplewood’s 2nd and 3rd trios ended 8th (18:08) and 9th (18:17).

Following West Middlesex and Maplewood in the boys’ race were New Castle (36), Cochranton (42) and Sharon (63).

Sharon entered 2 girls’ teams (Zhenea Davis, Delaney Ser, Foltz; Roys, Anderson, Bradshaw), who placed 6th and 9th, respectively, in 21:47 and 24:29.

Sharon’s boys (Fabian, Dilts, Buchanon) stood 7th in 17:57 and 14th (Greenawalt, Campbell, Stanek) in 22:41.

Kennedy Catholic boys (Kifer, Flynn, Winter) took 12th in 18:52.

˝ Cochranton (Morrison, Adams, Mudger) edged West Middlesex (Sweetapple, Rossi, Black), 16-27, in the JV boys’ race, in respective clockings of 18:43 to 19:51. West Middlesex went 1-2 in the girls’ JV race. Perrilli, Alsdorf and Garrett outdistanced Canon, Atterholt, Drda, 22:03 to 23:42.

˝ Middlesex boys (Unyerdorben, Gaydek, Drda) won the junior high race, as did Middlesex girls (Hope Pursel, B. Mantzell, Hannah Pursel). Their respective times were 18:57 and 20:49.

GIRLS GOLF

District 10 Team Championship


Hickory suffered a 369-384 loss to Mercyhurst Prep on Saturday at the D-10 2-A Team Championship at Riverside Golf Course in Cambridge Springs.

Rosy Hearns shot an 85 to lead Hickory. Alena Lancia carded a 97, Brianna Colbert had a 99 and Abby Hearns shot a 103.

For Mercyhurst Prep, Grace Brzowowski earned medalist honors by shooting an 80. Also, Georgia Capotis fired an 85, Jillian Johannes carded 100 and Catherine McElhaney shot a 104.

That Hickory foursome, along with Kelsey Dudash, will return to Riverside in Cambridge Springs Tuesday for the District 10 Individual Championships. The event tees off at 10 a.m.

Also competing will be Reynolds’ Izzy Schell, Marie Clark, Taylor Yahner and Jamie Vamosi and Grove City’s Fontaine McFeaters.

GIRLS SOCCER

ä Mercer 3, Redbank Valley 0 —
In Clarion County, the visiting Lady Mustangs’ Megan McKinney mustered a pair of goals and Alexis Mills another.

Lexie Arkwright had 2 assists and Sarah Stevens the other. Analise Whenry and McKinney shared the shutout in goal, Mercer mentor Eric Weller reported.
