HIGH SCHOOL FALL SPORTS: Hickory teams sweep CP Invite

MERCER COUNTY — Hickory High girls’ and boys’ cross country teams swept their respective championships during Saturday morning’s annual Commodore Perry Invitational.

Coach Tony Mastrian’s Lady Hornets harvested 31 points to outdistance an 8-team field, while the Hornets’ 25 points easily enabled their win in a 9-team event.

Hickory’s Lexi Bible won the girls’ individual crown in a time of 20:24.3 and was joined by teammates Jackie Abraham, Bailey Brown, Haley Boyd and Ciara Sonoga, who placed 4th, 8th, 9th and 13th, respectively.

Similarly, Hickory’s Kyle Boyd (17:45.3) bested the boys’ field and was joined in the top 10 by Logan Griffen, Derek Work, Marcus Sonoga and Kevin Janscar, who finished 4-5-6 and 9th. Their pack time was 50 seconds.

The Wilmington girls team finished runner-up to Hickory, led by Rikki Brumbaugh in 3rd place. Commodore Perry boys were runner-up, paced by second-place finisher Nate White.

BOYS SOCCER

ä Hickory 1, Strong Vincent 0 — At Hermitage, Zack Walters drove home the only goal off an assist by Nick Petrochko. Donte Green was in goal for Hickory (2-2-1). JV: Hickory, 3-1.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Hickory competed in the Grove City Tournament Saturday, going 2-5. Hickory stats: Katie Gustas 10 kills; Erin Hoffacker 40 assists; Victoria Tomko 57 digs; Hope Wilterdink 10 points, 22 kills, 12 digs; Wynter Linhart 13 digs; Nicole Lacava 10 blocks; Madison Collier 10 digs, 11 points.

GIRLS SOCCER

ä West Middlesex 5, Maplewood 1 — At West Middlesex, the Ms. Reds of coach Mike Williams moved to 2-2-1 on the year with the offensive outburst. Scoring for the winners were Kayla Ballard, Kaitlyn Beck, Sarah Mild, Molly Stonebraker, Searra McElrath. Mild had two assists and McElrath 1. MacKenzie Thompson started her first game of the year in goal, notching 7 saves. The Ms. Reds outshot the visitors 31-13.
