Roundup: Devils beat Mustangs; Sharon routs Saegertown

Herald staff

---- — The weather played havoc with the start time of many games Friday night, but all the Mercer County teams managed to complete their contests.

Following is a look at game results reported to The Herald:

ä Sharpsville 28, Mercer 14 — At Sharpsville, the two rivals clashed in a key District 10 Region 1-A opener that was much, much closer than the final score indicated.

The defending District 10-champion Devils of coach Paul Piccirilli never led in the game until late in the 4th quarter. With only 20 seconds remaining in the contest, Ross Llewellyn, who picked up much of the yardage on the game-winning drive, crashed into the end zone from 1-yard out. Joey Pagliaroli’s extra point made the lead 21-14.

Sharpsville added another score with 7 seconds left when Tyler Luchey returned an interception for a TD. Pagliaroli’s kick was good to cap off the victory.

Mercer, which lost 21 seniors to graduation from last year, gave the Devils everything they wanted. Coach Pat McClearn’s Mustangs took the opening kickoff and drove downfield on the arm of quarterback Logan Clarke who hit some key passes, including a 30-yarder to Vik Rymniak. But the state-ranked Blue Devils stopped the march deep in Sharpsville territory.

However, a Sharpsville fumble gave the ball right back to Mercer at the 17-yard line. A short time later on a 4th down play, the Mustangs were in the end zone as Clarke hooked up with Evan Nan on a 16-yard TD toss. PAT kick was good by Chase Hoffman.

But the lead was short-lived. Sharpsville drove right back after the ensuing kickoff to tie the score. Bryan Stafford went 36 yards with a quarterback keeper to tally the Devils’ touchdown and Pagliaroli booted the point after.

Mercer was back in business again in Sharpsville territory after a muffed punt by the Devils. And a few plays later, Zane O’Brien sprinted 26 yards for a tally. Hoffman’s kick lifted the visitors to a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter.

That lead held until intermission as both teams had turnovers.

Sharpsville came out fast in the second half and marched to the tying score. Pagliaroli went 7 yards up the middle for the TD and also nailed the point after.

That set up the late-game heroics for the Devils who moved to 2-0 on the season. Mercer fell to 1-1.

ä Sharon 40, Saegertown 12 — At Saegertown, Tigers’ senior quarterback Jesse Rodgers threw for 246 yards (12-of-13) and 3 touchdowns and ran for a score in leading Sharon (1-1) to a rout of the Panthers in a Region 3 clash.

Rodgers fired TD passes to Wayna Austin-Smith (14 yards), Kwentel Teague (64 yards) and Carnell Hawkins (63 yards). Rodgers also scored on a 5-yard run.

Also for coach Bob Fromm’s Tigers, Hawkins had a 49-yard TD run and Michael Bonner broke loose for an 83-yard run.

Sharon led 14-0 after the 1st quarter, 27-0 at halftime and 33-0 in the 3rd quarter before Saegertown scored.

Bonner led the Sharon ground game with 85 yards on 6 carries while Hawkins pulled in 6 passes for 145 yards.

Kyle Wise scored on a 34-yard run for the Panthers (0-2) and Ryan Kirdahy had a 14-yard TD run.

ä Brookfield 58, Campbell  20 — At Brookfield, the Warriors unleashed the offense to roll to their third straight victory of the season.

Jeremy Quinlan and Ryan Mosora each nailed a pair of TDs for the Warriors of Coach Randy Clark, while Colin Harklulich hit paydirt on a 41-yard aerial from Quinlan, Ron Kirila scored on a 20-yard fumble return on a kickoff, Jock Clark tallied on a 1-yard run; and Augustus Necastro burst in from 1-yard out.

Brookfield amassed 330 yards of offense. Mosora led the way with 136 yards on 18 carries.

ä Farrell 6, Kennedy Catholic  0 — At Farrell, the host Steelers had a tough go in the Region 1-A opener for both clubs before a second-half score produced the win.

The Farrell defense stopped KC deep in Steelers territory a few times to preserve the victory.

Farrell is 2-0 overall, while Kennedy is 0-2.

ä Lakeview 28, Conneaut 14 — The Sailors won their second straight contest and moved to 1-0 in Region 1-A with the victory. No stats or details were submitted prior to deadline.
