The annual fire and police chaplain training seminar sponsored by the Hermitage Fire Department, Hermitage Police Department, and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Hermitage is scheduled for May 6 and 7.
“Managing School Crises: From Theory to Application” is the course being offered this year. The two-day class, from the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, is designed to prepare chaplains, clergy, mental health providers, first responders, and educators for crises that occur in schools.
Based on extensive research and practical experiences, the seminar will help professionals work together to help children, faculty and staff, and parents deal effectively with traumatic situations.
This is the fifth chaplains seminar in Hermitage and normally attracts people from five or six states.
Dr. Tina S. Brookes, a licensed clinical social worker who was on scene following the theater shootings in Aurora, Colo., and the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., will lead the seminar.
She was the staff development coordinator on a U.S. Department of Education Emergency Response/Crisis Management for Schools grant, and developed the ASSIST (Assisting Students and Staff in Stressful Times) protocol for schools. She co-founded The Academy: National Institute for Crisis Response Training, and is a volunteer with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team.
