As we approach Thanksgiving this week, most of us will give thanks for our many blessings. However, the best way any of us can offer thanks is to share those blessings and give back to our community to help people less fortunate than ourselves.
The Herald Good News Fund’s 17th annual turkey drive is closing in on $9,000 in contributions, a goodly sum considering the push to provide turkeys for Christmas still has about a month to go.
However, much more is needed.
As we all know, this past year has been economically woeful for many local families where bread-winners have lost their jobs. Others wage-earners have seen hours cut or salaries reduced. For many of them, this Thanksgiving may not be as joyous. And even worse, their Christmas holiday would be bleak.
That’s where you and the year-round Good News Fund can help. A goal has been set to buy 1,000 turkeys for distribution at Christmas. We believe it is a realistic goal.
Generous people and businesses of the Mercer County area have rallied around those less fortunate in past years by donating money to the fund. In fact, in the first 16 years, more than $160,000 was donated, which bought more than 18,000 turkeys and other food to be distributed over the holiday.
The money will be used to purchase turkeys at cost through D’Onofrio’s Food Center, Hermitage, and then delivered through many charitable agencies throughout the county area.
One of the problems is that fewer people are working, therefore bringing greater need. However, there are also fewer people able to donate. That’s why we are hoping that others step up to help.
What better Christmas present for your loved ones than to give a gift in their name to the Good News Fund? Or donate in memory of a loved one that passed on and will be missed this holiday.
Names of the contributors, or the people they which to honor, are published periodically in The Herald as the appeal moves through the holiday season.
So as you carve that turkey on Thanksgiving Day, think about people who don’t have very much to eat. Your contributions to the Good News Fund can assure that those who are struggling will have food to feed their kids on Christmas Day.
Thanks.
Anyone wanting to make a tax-free donation should make a check payable to The Good News Fund and drop off or mail it to The Herald, 52 S. Dock St., Sharon, 16146, or to the Allied News office in Grove City.
