It was about 25 years ago that a Rand McNally survey rated the Mercer County area as last in the United States in terms of culture. That’s right, dead last.
Well, Mercer County, to reiterate an overused but appropriate term: “You’ve come a long way baby!”
Our area today features multiple concerts, from downtown Sharon luncheon musical performances, to weekly evening performances at Buhl Farm Park in Hermitage. From the Greenville Symphony Orchestra to the Shenango Valley Chorale, our area provides outstanding cultural events.
The Sharpsville Opera House brings in some top performers that we would see only if we ventured to much bigger cities.
The great classical work with our youth by Abbey and Denise Alter through The Walnut Lodge and Ballet Theater Shenango Valley is yet another shining example.
Our local colleges provide various cultural attractions and our high school drama departments put on plays every year that rival some professional productions.
The Mercer County Senior Follies is right around the corner and this fall we’ll have an opportunity to see the annual Mercer County High School Band Show, which features local marching bands.
And how about the weekly “Artie Gras” gatherings at the Quaker Steak & Lube?
But those are only a smattering of the events that have raised our area from that one-time embarrassing ranking to a region that is proud of its cultural advancements.
One of the examples of how far we’ve come is the annual Hermitage Arts Festival, which will be conducted this weekend.
It will feature more than 30 artists, artisans and crafters, and everything from paintings and sculptures to jewelry and soaps.
The fest, which was featured in Herald stories Thursday, will open with a concert at 7 tonight at Rodney White Olympic Park, followed by a showing of the popular movie “The Blind Side.”
All events are free and attendees may bring lawn chairs and blankets; food vendors will be on hand as well.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be various demonstrations and several band performances. The Community Library of the Shenango Valley will provide numerous children’s activities.
When it comes to culture, we no longer take a backseat to other areas. Part of the reason is the Hermitage Arts Festival, which offers something for people of all ages and interests.

OUR VIEW: Dearth of candidate interest defies worth of legislative races
In case you hadn’t noticed, this is an election year. Actually every year is, but this is one of the big ones. Sure, there’s some sort of presidential race going on, but that’s just a sideshow to where the real action in this year’s election is – or at least should be.
