Here are some thoughts from a guy who is really concerned about the mindset of Republicans as they choose a presidential candidate.
One of the key points they keep making is: Who can we get that can beat Barack Obama in November?
Shouldn’t the real question be: Who can we get that would be a good president?
• Doesn’t it bother anybody else about a recent move by the Mercer County commissioners? I really find it difficult to say it’s OK to get rid of solicitor Bill McConnell, a Sharon lawyer, and hire a firm out of Pittsburgh.
I realize I am not privy to everything that went into the decision, but as we try to bring businesses into this county and provide jobs for locals, why would anyone hire people from outside the area? Even if you decide to get a new lawyer, there are plenty in this area. It doesn’t appear to be a massive amount of savings for us.
What a coincidence that newly elected commissioner Matt McConnell was by far the highest vote-getter during the recent election and he is a cousin of solicitor Bill McConnell who was let go.
How strange that the decision was made before McConnell took his position on the board.
• Supposedly a new book by a New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor portrays Michelle Obama as a behind-the-scenes force in the executive mansion.
Really?
Does anybody think that the wives of every president don’t have a say in what goes on? Every married man is well aware that their spouses have influence in many important decisions.
Just as I’ve always said: I make all the decisions in my house – as soon as my wife tells me what they are.
It was a shame that Laura Bush didn’t have more influence when it came to George W. because she was definitely much more intelligent.
• There is a major concern about an obesity rate in this country that has reached about 30 percent. So why in the heck does Hostess Co. have to file for bankruptcy?
You would think that people are shoving those tasty treats in the mouths faster than ever.
In reality it appears the move is to get relief from a huge pension fund that is owed retirees. Sounds like Sharon Steel and other companies that have hurt their retirees.
The retirees will probably get a special offer: The company is cutting your pension checks, but you can get a lifetime supply of Twinkies.
Therefore in protest I will never eat another Twinkie. (It has been many years since I ate one anyhow).
• Speaking of sweets – I like them – but I almost never eat dessert with dinner. But I have to laugh everytime I am in Eat ‘n Park, a restaurant I truly do like very much.
The waitresses have been wearing shirts with sayings and one was:
“Life is short – Eat pie!”
It occurred to me that I would write:
“Life is short – Eat pie! Then it will be shorter!”
The Herald’s Lynn Saternow writes this column each Saturday for the Opinion Page.

Gay-marriage opponents on wrong side of history
Thirty years from today, when my son is nearly as old as I am now, I imagine he’ll be able to marry anyone he wants. It won’t be a big deal if that turns out to be a dude.
Gay weddings – and divorces – will be as common as straight ones are now and young people will wonder what all the fuss was about back in the old days. -
