---- —
Funeral service will be Monday for William “Bill” R. Gills, 67, of Findley Township. He passed away truly unexpectedly as his wife, Susan, was driving enroute to Pearson Park for a music concert on Sunday afternoon the 12th of August. He had a cardiac episode just two miles out of Mercer that made him lose consciousness and lean on Susan. He was rushed to the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System, where he was resuscitated. As his family gathered around in hopes to see his gentle heart behind his big blue eyes, Bill deeply struggled but passed away at 2:28 p.m. Friday (8-17-12).
Bill leaves his legacy with his wife Susan L. “Smeech” Gills of almost 40 years of marriage (Sept. 9, 1972) and with their two sons Kurtis W. Gills and Kevin M. Gills, who were his pride and joy, especially enjoying them through their childhood while supporting and coaching them through life and sports.
Bill also leaves behind his brother, Dave Gills and his wife Terrie Bales; and his half brother, Wilber “Bucky” Blair. Additionally, Bill leaves behind his nephews, Dave Gills and Aaron Gills and his wife Nancy and “Little Leo.”
During his school years, Bill excelled in baseball and especially in high school football as a fullback with many winning touchdowns for Grove City High School. In addition, he still holds the record for the 55-yard dash. Bill graduated from GCHS in the class of 1964.
Through his career, Bill was a Navy veteran and then was employed at the former Cooper Bessemer engine plant in Grove City for 33 years until the business closed, ending as a mechanical drafter with various employments thereafter.
In his retirement, Bill humbly enjoyed the beautiful tranquility of the pond and surrounding flowers that were created by his loving sons in the front yard of his home.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Clifford and Ruth Gills of Grove City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be appreciated.
