BALTIMORE – Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. George L. McFadden Jr., a 25-year resident of Annapolis, Md., died of heart failure on Tuesday, July 24, 2012, in Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. He was 84.
Gen. McFadden was born Oct. 16, 1927, in Sharon to George L. McFadden Sr. and Frances Byrne McFadden.
He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Omaha and his master of science from George Washington University. He was a graduate of Harvard University’s Advanced Management Program.
Gen. McFadden served on active duty in the Army from 1946 to 1983, advancing from private to major general. He served as a forward observer in Korea in 1950 and as a battalion commander with the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1966. Other key assignments included commanding officer, 7th Infantry Division Artillery in Korea; deputy commanding general of the Army Security Agency; deputy commanding general of the 9th Infantry Division; deputy director of the National Security Agency; commanding general, Southern European Task Force; and deputy director for Foreign Intelligence, Defense Intelligence Agency.
Upon retirement from the Army, he was: director, Washington Studies and Analysis Group, McDonnell-Douglas; corporate vice president, CompuDyne Corp.; senior vice president, the Abbott Group Inc.; and director, Office of Security Affairs, U.S. Department of Energy.
Gen. McFadden’s military decorations included Silver Star, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with V Device with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal (11 awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with V Device, Purple Heart and the Parachutist Badge.
Gen. McFadden was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Edgewater, Md. His interests included traveling and boating.
Gen. McFadden was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark McFadden; his brothers, John, Joseph and Eugene McFadden; and his sister, Anne Lumpp.
He is survived by: his wife, Floretta B. McFadden; his children, Kathleen Dupuis, Annapolis; Kenneth McFadden, Herndon, Va.; Robert McFadden, Palm Harbour, Fla.; George McFadden, Edgewater; and William McFadden, Annapolis; and his brothers and sisters, Bernard McFadden, Keystone Heights, Fla.; Edward McFadden, Houston; Mary Frances DeJohn, Sharon; and Margaret McCormick, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew, Jennifer, John, Bryan, Sarah, Megan, Kevin, Kelly, Zach, Libby, Patrick and Nicholas; and four great-grandchildren, Graham, Grace, Eli and Elizabeth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Building Fund.
