Shirley Jean Neal Thompson
Coolspring homemaker was active in community
Shirley Jean Neal Thompson of Coolspring Township passed away at 5:25 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a lengthy illness. She was 81.
Mrs. Thompson was born June 29, 1930, in Mercer to Paul Arthur Neal and Ethel Luella Marsh Neal.
She was a 1948 graduate of Mercer High School and was employed as an operator at Bell Telephone.
As a homemaker, Shirley was devoted to her family and community. She enjoyed reading and was an avid baker and cook. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband.
Mrs. Thompson was a lifelong member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer.
She was a former member of Mercer County Living Center Auxiliary, Mercer County Homemakers, Mercer County Historical Society, Coolspring Grange, Brandy Springs Park Board, a card club, Mercer County Republican Party Committee, Mercer Area Library and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a Girl Scout leader; worked for more than 20 years with Mercer County Meals-on-Wheels, since its origin in 1973; and was a Shenango Valley Home volunteer.
She married David Russell Thompson on Jan. 7, 1950, in Tidioute, Pa.
Surviving are her devoted husband, David, who cared for her during her lengthy illness; three sons, Russell P. Thompson and his wife Melissa, Volant; and Jeff B. Thompson and Timothy J. Thompson, both Mercer; a daughter, Lou Ann Swope and her husband Gary, Luthersburg, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Michelle Thompson, Melinda Wise and her husband Jamey, Russell Thompson, Russell Chace and his wife Anna, Ashley Swope, Dulcie Hanzely and her husband William, and Ethan Swope; and two great-grandchildren, Coral and Liam.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter Sue Ellen Thompson.
As an expression of sympathy, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Bethany Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Venango St., Mercer, PA 16137; and Sharon Regional Health System Hospice and Palliative Care, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday (2-7-12) in the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. F. Stanley Keehlwetter, dean of the chapel of Grove City College, officiating.
Interment: Woodland Cemetery, Grove City.
