Mary DeMartinis

Centenarian owned Hickory Bowl, was born in Europe

---- — A celebration of life and funeral service will be held Friday for Mary DeMartinis of Lake Road, Mercer, formerly of Lamor Road, Hermitage. She passed away peacefully of natural causes at 4:30 a.m. Sunday (1-13-13) in Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage. She was 100.

Mrs. DeMartinis was born April 26, 1912, in a small town near Austria-Hungary, the daughter of Frank and Margaret Eged Sarvas.

Her parents immigrated to the United States from central Europe when she was 2 years old and they settled in Sharpsville.

Mary was a member at one time of the former St. Ann’s Church on Fruit Avenue in Farrell.

She was a self-taught businesswoman who, along with her son, owned and operated the former Hickory Bowl on East State Street in Hermitage.

She was somewhat of a linguist as she was able to speak Italian, English and her first language, Hungarian.

She loved to entertain and cook for her family and friends in years past; she also enjoyed traveling.

Her husband, Felix DeMartinis, whom she married April 1, 1928, passed away in 1972.

She leaves her daughter, Dolores Jennings and her husband Marc, North Dakota; and her daughter-in-law, Peggy DeMartinis, Hermitage. She also leaves her two sisters, Margaret “Peg” Forrest, Hermitage; and Priscilla Ridgway and her husband Robert, Sharpsville; two brothers, John Sarvas and his wife Helen; and Eddy Sarvas, all Sharpsville; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren including Sheri L. Latimer and her husband Bradley, with whom she lived; and nine great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Frank DeMartinis; and four sisters and a brother.

Service: Celebration of life and funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the church with the Rev. August P. Hurst, pastor, officiating.

Interment: St. Ann’s Cemetery, Hermitage.
