Mary Lou Schmelzer of Grove City passed away at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2013, in Orchard Manor, Pine Township. She was 88.
Mrs. Schmelzer was born Dec. 12, 1924, in West Newton, Westmoreland County, to Frank and Laura B. Marker Berk.
She began her career in office work with the former Shawgo Construction Co., Grove City, and retired as a bookkeeper for the former Magnum Mineral Corp. She formerly was a bookkeeper with Fargo and McGill Accountant Firm.
Mary Lou was a 67-year member of Grace United Methodist Church, Grove City, where she participated in the Weaver Disciple Class in the church.
She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 86 and White Shrine of Jerusalem Shrine 53, both Grove City.
Mary Lou and her husband enjoyed traveling and visited all the states except Hawaii. She liked reading, knitting and sewing and made quilts for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her husband, John D. Schmelzer, whom she married Sept. 7, 1946, survives at home.
Also surviving are a son, J. David Schmelzer and his wife Margaret, Waynesboro, Pa.; two grandchildren, Samantha Matter and her husband Rodney, Apollo, Pa.; and Shawn Schmelzer and his wife Vicki, Sparrows Point, Md.; and four grandchildren, Michala, Tresa, Jake and Luke.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruth Carnes; and a brother, William Berk.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 210 S. Broad St., Grove City, PA 16127.
