Veronica “Ronni” Anzalone Smith, 340 E. Market St., Mercer, passed away at 9:11 p.m. Sept. 11, 2012, with her family at her bedside in Magee-Womens Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was 53.
Known as “Ronni” throughout her life by her family, friends and colleagues, she was born June 24, 1959, in New Castle to Anthony P. and Kathleen Harrah Anzalone.
Ronni married Russell A. Smith on Aug. 19, 1989.
She was a graduate of New Castle High School, class of 1977, Seton Hill College, Greensburg, class of 1981, and earned her juris doctor degree in law from the University of Pittsburgh Law School, class of 1984.
Ronni was a partner at Bogaty & Smith, P.C., Attorneys At Law, Grove City, and had been practicing law in the area for 28 years. She was a part-time attorney for the Mercer County Public Defender’s Office and was the Mercer Borough solicitor. Ronni was known in the law community for her specialty work in criminal defense and bankruptcy law. Her passion was to help people and protect their rights.
She was a longtime board member of the Catholic Charities of the Erie Diocese where she was instrumental in assisting families with adoption. For many years Ronni served on the board of directors and was past president of the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania.
Most important to Ronni were family gatherings, reading, going to the beach and watching her “girls” dance. She had a compassionate heart and always put others first. Ronni will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Survivors include: Her husband Russell at home; two daughters, Carissa Antonia Smith, St. Vincent College, and Elizabeth Annamarie Smith at home; her parents, Anthony and Kathleen Anzalone, New Castle; in-laws Russell R. and Donna Smith, Mercer; one sister, Patricia Carfang-Myers and husband Daniel, Mercer; three brothers, Anthony M. Anzalone, New Castle, Edward S. Anzalone, Tucson, Ariz., and Vincent A. Anzalone and wife Lisa, New Castle.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Saturday (9-15-12) in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 100 Penn Ave., Mercer, with the Rev. James J. Kennelley as Celebrant.
Burial: Mercer Citizens Cemetery.
