Marie B. Whyte

Active in church, hospital volunteer worked at prison

---- — Marie B. Whyte, 174 W. Jamestown Road, Greenville (West Salem Township), passed away following a brief illness at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, in UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh. She was 77.

She was born April 28, 1935, in Transfer to George and Gwendolyn Morrison Benninghoff.

Marie was retired from the State Correctional Institution at Mercer, Findley Township, where she worked in different administrative capacities. After retirement, she volunteered, up until very recently, at UPMC Horizon, Greenville.

She was an active member of Hillside Presbyterian Church in Greenville, where she sang in the choir and played in the bell choir.  She was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 63 in Greenville.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially during holiday gatherings. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, bird watching, playing the organ and singing, and the company of her dog, Barney.

A cancer survivor, she was a supporter of the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life activities.

She married Robert N. Whyte in 1983; he preceded her in death in 1994.

Marie is survived by a son, Timothy S. Burt, Greenville; two daughters, Kathleen Carbo and her husband Ronald, Greenville; and Joyce E. York and her husband Joseph, Meadville; three stepsons, Robert N. Whyte Jr. and his wife, Dawn, Pittsburgh, David Whyte and his wife, Pat, Jamestown; and Kevin Whyte, Greenville; a stepdaughter, Karen Gallisath Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren, Katie Carbo, Greenville; Cari Paden and her husband Andy, Greenville; Jeremy Aubel and his wife Maranatha, Grove City; David John York, Meadville; Rebecca Stainbrook and her husband Michael, Girard, Erie County; and Joshua S. Burt, Greenville; many stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren, Aitlin Aubel, Kaylee Mae York, J. Taylor York, J. Ryland York, Riley Michelle Stainbrook and Delaney Lynn Stainbrook; and many stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, George Benninghoff and his wife Jo Ellen, Fredonia; and a sister, Judith Gill and her husband Jerry, Greenville.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Linda Junk.

Burial: Burial with committal prayers will follow at Shenango Valley Cemetery, Greenville.
