  SHIPPENSBURG — The opening day of the annual PIAA Track & Field Championships did not play out as planned — at least at the outset —- for Mercer County’s contingent. But as the day waned and clouds converged over Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium, the sun broke through in the person of Hickory High’s Lauren Lubarski.
  
  Lubarski — a junior and Hickory High’s first 4-event state qualifier — rallied to win the high-jump competition with a personal-best 5-foot-4, upsetting Northwestern’s top-seeded Nicole Lockard and North East’s 2nd-seeded Alexandra Schriefer.

  Once you’ve climbed to the mountaintop, the free-fall can be fatal, unless you have the fortitude to fly again. Lakeview High senior Fawn Miller’s 2-year reign atop the PIAA pedestal in Class AA javelin competition was ended Saturday afternoon by top-seeded Tamaqua Area’s Allie Updyke.

  Friday's forboding weather forecast for Shippensburg University and environs was not promising. And it seemed as though a dark cloud hovered over Mercer County's contingent during early events at the annual PIAA Track & Field Championships. But Mercer County's collective mood brightend considerably -- literally and figuratively -- by early afternoon as a pair of throwers, Hickory High's Emily Woods and Wilmington's Brad Zaboroski, garnered gold in the discus and shot put,respectively.
