Case of would-be home invader bound for court

---- — Markees Hughes didn’t say a word in his defense after a Sharon man and his neighbor testified in court Friday about the events that led up to Hughes’ Nov. 5 emasculation.

Pete Delli Bovi, 58, said he was watching television when he heard “this big noise” that was someone – whom he identified in court as Hughes – trying to bust down the door of his Malleable Street home.

“I got my gun and I saw a guy coming in and I shot a couple times,” Delli Bovi told District Judge Dennis M. Songer. “He said ‘Oh s- - -’ and ran.”

Hughes, 18, of 282 Orchard St. in Sharon, showed up at the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System shortly after 3 p.m. that afternoon with a gunshot wound to his groin and testicles.

“I didn’t even know if I hit him,” Delli Bovi said.

Delli Bovi’s neighbor, Robert Venetta, corroborated Delli Bovi’s account, saying he heard what Hughes said when he was shot and “he jumped up.”

Hughes was transferred from Sharon Regional to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, for treatment of the injury and bore no visible effects from it during his brief appearance in Songer’s court Friday.

Songer bound to common pleas court charges of burglary and criminal trespass filed against Hughes, who was returned to Mercer County Jail on $100,000 bond.
