Blown transformer cuts power

MERCER — An outage in the Mercer area left nearly 1,200 households without power on Saturday night.

Mercer police on duty Saturday said the power outage was the result of a blown transformer in Jefferson Township, Mayor Steven Van Woert said Sunday.

Mercer residents reported hearing a loud noise or explosion around 8 p.m., and some near the Reznor on McKinley Avenue reported seeing a flash.

A Mercer County 911 supervisor said Saturday night he hadn’t heard any reports of an explosion but confirmed that many in the Mercer area were without power.

He said power went out about 8 p.m., came back on about 20 minutes later, and went off about 10 minutes later. The supervisor said he had been in contact with Penn Power and they told him the outage affected 1,228 customers.

Penn Power’s Web site indicated at least 500 customers in Mercer County were still without power Sunday morning, but by the afternoon, power appeared to have been restored.
