MERCER COUNTY —
Storms Thursday knocked down some trees and power lines in Mercer County, but that was about it.
A supervisor for Mercer County 911 said the fuss about tornado warnings “didn’t amount to much.”
She said some trees and power lines were downed in the Greenville and Jamestown area during afternoon storms.
Reported damage was “very minor,” she said.
Some towns set off warning sirens and folks headed to their basements around 2 p.m., when scanner chatter talked of funnel clouds spotted near the stateline as the storm moved east.
There were no tornadoes confirmed in Mercer County, the supervisor said.
As of Thursday evening, about 1,300 Penn Power customers were without power in Mercer County, according to the electric company’s website.
The bulk of those were in Mercer and south and east of the borough and in the northeastern corner of the county. A smattering of homes throughout the rest of the county had outages, as well.
AccuWeather Meteorologist Steve Travis said the storms raced through Pennsylvania and the strongest seemed to hit east of Mercer County.
He said there were tornadic storms in the system and there were reports of twisters in New York state.
Heavy downpours and lightning were supposed to continue overnight but Travis said the second wave – “leftovers” – would not be as strong as the afternoon cells.
