HERMITAGE — Marine boot camp. It’s got a reputation almost as fierce as the warriors it produces, and that’s what brings together a half dozen recruits every week outside the Marine recruitment center in Park Place plaza, Hermitage.

Under the direction of Staff Sergeant Randy Jewett, the recruits run in formation through the nearby Hermitage school grounds and sweat through calisthenics, pull-ups and crunches to get in shape for some of the toughest training of their lives.

It’s called the delayed entry program, said Jewett, and it helps them to find recruits who might not be military-trim yet, but can get there in a few months to a year.
