Food safety advocate to be honored by Ono

GROVE CITY — A Cincinnati woman who helps run a Grove City-based food safety group is being honored for her work by Yoko Ono, who will present her with a grant in Iceland.

Barbara Kowalcyk, co-founder and director of food safety for the Center for Foodborne Illness Research and Prevention, will receive the LennonOno Grant for Peace on Oct. 9, according to a news release from the center.

“I am deeply honored that my work in food safety is being recognized by Yoko Ono,” Mrs. Kowalcyk said of the widow of slain musical legend John Lennon.

She founded the nonprofit group in 2007 with her mother, Patricia Buck of Grove City, who also serves as executive director.

The women and their families have worked as advocates of food safety since 2001, when Mrs. Kowalcyk’s 2 1/2-year-old son Kevin died after being infected with E. coli they believe he contracted from contaminated beef at a fair in Wisconsin.
