SHARPSVILLE —
Three groups are partnering with the borough of Sharpsville to buy a community billboard and place it in front of the borough building.
Last week council members pledged $1,200 and land in front of the borough building at Walnut and Main streets for a wooden sign much like the ones outside the Mercer County Courthouse and municipal buildings in Farrell and Mercer. It will hold six lines of text and include changeable letters.
The sign was the idea of local arts supporters looking to spread the word about the activities on the local stage. The Pierce Opera House, Area Community Theatre of Sharpsville and the Sharpsville Historical Society each will pitch in $500 for the project said Susan Piccirilli, vice president of ACTS.
Councilman Jack Cardwell called it “an excellent idea.”
Piccirilli said the 5-by-8-foot sign will be painted blue and white and will feature black letters. It will be built in front of the large evergreen on the borough lawn.
The arts group had met with the three-person parks and recreation committee prior to last week’s council meeting. There had been some discussion of an alternate location for the sign – down the street in the borough’s park at Walnut and Shenango streets. And though that was the preference of at least one member of the committee, it wasn’t the overall pick. Council members thought it would be easier to watch over if it is by the borough building, just steps away from the police department.
The only real question that remains is what goes on the sign. The parks and recreation committee will develop some guidelines in the coming weeks.
Council President John Alfredo said, “I do not believe that this can be open to anyone in the public (to) throw letters on this sign.”
Cardwell said, “I can see someone like the KKK put something on it.”
Piccirilli, whose husband Bob Piccirilli serves on council and is chairman of the parks and recreation committee, offered a page of upcoming events at the opera house as examples of what the groups hope to publicize.
But Alfredo noted, “Just because you’re paying for it doesn’t mean you get unbridled access” to advertise on it.
