Pair killed when cycle crashes into tractor-trailer

BROOKFIELD — Two Greenville residents were killed Tuesday afternoon when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a truck at state routes 7 and 82  in Brookfield.

Ohio Highway Patrol said the 12:33 p.m. crash killed the driver of the motorcycle, Daniel H. Minchoff, 54 and his passenger, 50-year-old Debora L. Roberts. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Minchoff was driving a red 2002 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic motorcycle when, police said, he ran through the red light while traveling west on Route 82 and struck a tractor-trailer traveling south on Route 7. The motorcycle appeared to strike the gas tank area of the truck. Hazmat crews were called to clean up the fuel spill.

The tractor-trailer was driven by Daniel Hopkins, 57, of Orwell, Ohio. He was not injured.

Brookfield firefighters and emergency medical crews were on scene for several hours before both victims were removed.

A woman who identified herself only as Hopkins’ ex-wife, said he called her right after the accident happened. “He was pretty shook up. He’s been driving for a long time and nothing like this ever happened,” she said.

A crowd gathered outside the Brookfield Diner to watch as police reconstructed the scene as part of the investigation. Several other motorcyclists stopped to ask what happened when they saw the bike on the flatbed.

It has been a deadly riding season for area motorcyclists. Minchoff and Roberts were the sixth and seventh people killed in motorcycle crashes in the last two months in the Mercer County area.
