FARRELL, BROOKFIELD —
A Sharon man has been charged with engaging in a gun battle with another man Aug. 4 in Farrell.
Lennie Harvey Jr., 30, of 827 Ravine Place, has been charged with aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.
Southwest Mercer County Regional and Brookfield police are investigating a connection between this incident and a shooting roughly 2è hours later in the 700 block of Brookfield Avenue. Brookfield police are not known to have filed any charges in their shooting case, although two Brookfield policeman have been asked to testify at Harvey’s preliminary hearing on the Farrell shooting charges.
Harvey was present at both locations, Southwest police said.
Police said they were called at 12:12 a.m. about the shooting in the 800 block of Roemer Boulevard.
Video surveillance footage shows Harvey walking in the parking lot east of Razzcal’s Bar with an object in his hand, police said. He waves at people in front of the bar “in a manner as if to tell them to get away,” said detective Kevin Wherry.
Several people on both sides of Roemer run, police said.
Harvey walks toward Roemer and the object he carries becomes visible as a handgun, police said.
Harvey says something to an unidentified man across Roemer, police said. The man starts walking and Harvey lifts the gun and shoots at the man, the bullet shattering a window at Jac’s Kitchen and Counters, police said. Another man standing nearby runs away, police said.
The man Harvey was saying something to pulls a handgun from his waistband and fires at Harvey, at least two bullets hitting the ground by Harvey’s feet, police said.
Harvey and the man continue trading shots, then Harvey runs, police said.
Five shell casings were found by the Razzcal’s parking lot, police said. The casings are identical to some of those found in a gun under the front passenger seat of a white 1994 Plymouth Acclaim searched in the Brookfield shooting investigation, Southwest police said.
Harvey was in Rock A Billie’s, 759 Brookfield Ave., just before the Brookfield shooting and told a policeman who was in the bar that, “It’s about to go down,” Southwest said. The policeman saw Harvey and several other men get into the Plymouth Acclaim, Southwest said.
The policeman ran outside after hearing the shots and saw Harvey come around the corner of the bar, Southwest said. A 9mm handgun was found near where Harvey was spotted, Southwest said.
Harvey was questioned by Brookfield police wearing the same clothes as he did during the Farrell shooting, police said.
Dana A. Borders, 30, of Sharon, was shot in the Brookfield incident. He was treated at a hospital and taken to Trumbull County Jail on an unrelated warrant.
Harvey is in Mercer County Jail. He faces a preliminary hearing at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday before District Judge Ronald E. Antos, Farrell.
