GREENVILLE — Greenville council members Tuesday voted 4 to 3 against the street committee’s suggestion to lower parking fines by $10.
Committee members said the $25 fine for parking too long in spots with time limits deters people from visiting Greenville and spending money at downtown businesses.
A survey of nearby towns shows Greenville’s parking fines are the same or lower, said council President Brian Shipley. Time limits on some spots will soon go from one to two hours, which could reduce the number of parking tickets, Councilman Jasson Urey said.
Meanwhile, Greenville’s garbage-collection rates won’t go up as expected when the one-year contract extension takes effect April 1.
Borough officials and Waste Management Inc., West Sunbury, agreed in November on renewing the contract with a 2.5 percent rate hike for residential customers and a 3 percent increase for commercial customers.
Council members met again recently with Waste Management officials, who agreed to extend the contract to March 31, 2011, with no rate hike, said Shipley.
