Bean bag didn't stop Pa. suspect before kill shot

July 28 — GREENVILLE, Pa. (AP) — A police official in charge of a special law enforcement team says a non-lethal bean bag fired from a shotgun did not stop a northwestern Pennsylvania robbery suspect before an officer fatally shot the suspect in the head.

Thirty-year-old Jeffrey Anderson, of Greenville, was shot about 8 p.m. Tuesday when officers say he tried to back over them in his car when they arrived with arrest and search warrants relating to four convenience store robberies.

Hermitage police Chief Patrick McElhinny, who is president of the board of the Mercer County Critical Incident Response team, tells The Herald newspaper of Sharon, that he believes the shooting was justified.

Police have yet to name the officer who fired the fatal shot. McElhinny said about 10 officers from various area municipalities were involved in the CIRT response.
