Group searching for hurt dog

SHENANGO VALLEY — Animal Advocacy volunteers continue to search for a stray dog who may have been shot by a Hermitage resident claiming the animal attacked him Sunday afternoon.

Gerda Widmyer, director of the animal protective organization, is asking for the public’s help in locating the dog and closing the case. She said she doesn’t believe the animal attacked anyone, because it is too skittish to get close to anyone.

The dog, possibly a young Great Dane, has been living off the kindness of strangers, being fed by various homeowners in the areas of French Street Extension, March Street and Spencer and Stambaugh avenues in Sharon and has even been fed by Widmyer herself, who said she just “couldn’t catch” her.

She “actually has the habit of taking the bowls and running with them,” she said. “She’s been on our minds for a long time.”

In June, the dog had a litter of eight puppies in a shed on French Street Extension, and officials from the animal shelter, including the state dog warden, removed the puppies but couldn’t catch the mother.

Widmyer took in the puppies and all have since been placed, she said. The mother, however, has continued to roam the area, occasionally visiting the shed where she had the puppies.

“I was so angry. We could have had her when they got the puppies. I can’t believe we didn’t get her,” she said.

“In the meantime, I’m asking this idiot not to shoot at her again. Please don’t shoot. And with all those houses around ...” she said.

Hermitage police said they have not received a report of anyone shooting at a dog.

Widmyer said about 23 people were out Sunday looking for the dog and about 10 again on Monday, but her biggest concern now is whether the dog is still alive.

“We don’t know. If he shot her, she may have gone somewhere and died. She might be wounded. We just need to find this dog and close this case,” she said.

She is asking that people check their garages and sheds and look for the dog. If anyone sees anything, Widmyer asks that they call Animal Advocacy at 724-347-3468. Another group of volunteers will meet today at 1 p.m. to continue searching.
